Book Description

Buen Vivir and the Challenges to Capitalism in Latin America

Buen Vivir and the Challenges to Capitalism in Latin America PDF Author: Henry Veltmeyer
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000198871
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 363

Book Description
This book explores the battleground between neoliberal capitalist development processes in Latin America and the challenges to these systems that can be found through innovative community-driven buen vivir/vivir bien initiatives. In the current climate of worldwide capitalist development, Latin America is caught between left-leaning proposals for progressive policies towards a more inclusive form of development, and the re-emergence of harsh austerity measures, neoliberal reforms and right-wing populism. Divided into two parts, this book first provides a retrospective analysis of the advance of resource-seeking ‘extractive’ capital across the continent since the 1990s. The second part goes on to focus on forward-looking challenges to neoliberal capitalist development, focusing in particular on the indigenous notion of buen vivir/vivir bien – the concept of ‘living well’ in social solidarity and harmony with nature. Drawing on cases in Mexico and Venezuela, the book argues that it will be through these new approaches to social change that we will move beyond development as we know it towards a more inclusive form of ‘postdevelopment’. Looking hopefully towards this future of development, this collection offers an essential analysis of the vortex of social change currently consuming Latin America and will be key reading for advanced scholars and researchers in the fields of Development Studies, Latin America Studies, Politics, and Social Change.

Technological Revolutions and the Periphery

Technological Revolutions and the Periphery PDF Author: Eduardo da Motta e Albuquerque
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031434366
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 227

Book Description
This book evaluates the uneven propagation of technological revolutions, investigating the roots of this phenomenon in the absorptive capabilities that are built by countries and regions at the periphery. To understand this global process, this book looks to two dimensions: time and geography. Temporally, the book follows the sequence of technological revolutions in the last 250 years. With regard to geography, the book studies five different regions at the periphery—China, India, Africa, Russia and Latin America—to understand how they differ in the institutional processes that shape their absorptive capabilities. Focusing on each technological revolution and its impact on those five peripheric regions, the chapters illustrate how each region coped with each shock wave emanating from the center. Providing a truly global outlook of a complex system with a dynamic nature, this book will be of interest to researchers and students of development economics, the economics of innovation, evolutionary economics, and the economics of science and technology.

Metropolis, Money and Markets

Metropolis, Money and Markets PDF Author: Jeroen Klink
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429602162
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 197

Book Description
This book explores the impact of finance on urban spaces as well as cities' role in the social constitution and dissemination of financial logistics and techniques. It brings together literature from different disciplinary areas to increase our understanding of financialization. It observes how non-financial members of society, such as public bureaucrats, urban planners, the media and so on, are actively involved in the financialization of urban areas. With an explicit focus on Brazil, a developing country in the Global South, the book demonstrates how the country has been grappling with complex and contradictory processes of neoliberalization, decentralization, re-democratization and institutional-legal strengthening of frameworks for urban and regional planning, stressing the relations between urban space and finance capital. With a distinct view of filling a gap in the current literature on urban financialization, the book aims to focus on less developed areas in this field and link them with the literature on social studies of finance. This makes the text relevant for academics and scholars of urban studies and planning theory, geography, development studies and political economy, as well as scholars in the US and Europe interested in understanding Brazilian patterns of financialization.

World Literature, Cosmopolitanism, Globality

World Literature, Cosmopolitanism, Globality PDF Author: Gesine Müller
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110641135
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 246

Book Description
From today’s vantage point it can be denied that the confidence in the abilities of globalism, mobility, and cosmopolitanism to illuminate cultural signification processes of our time has been severely shaken. In the face of this crisis, a key concept of this globalizing optimism as World Literature has been for the past twenty years necessarily is in the need of a comprehensive revision. World Literature, Cosmopolitanism, Globality: Beyond, Against, Post, Otherwise offers a wide range of contributions approaching the blind spots of the globally oriented Humanities for phenomena that in one way or another have gone beyond the discourses, aesthetics, and political positions of liberal cosmopolitanism and neoliberal globalization. Departing basically (but not exclusively) from different examples of Latin American literatures and cultures in globalized contexts, this volume provides innovative insights into critical readings of World Literature and its related conceptualizations. A timely book that embraces highly innovative perspectives, it will be a mustread for all scholars involved in the field of the global dimensions of literature.

Varieties of capitalism and Mexico, after the economic reforms between 1982 and 2012

Varieties of capitalism and Mexico, after the economic reforms between 1982 and 2012 PDF Author: Gabriel Alonso Santana
Publisher: Cuvillier Verlag
ISBN: 3736969236
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 291

Book Description
This work departs from the literature about Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) to study Mexico after the economic and political reforms enacted there between 1982 an 2012, which were characterised as neo liberal. These were a 180º turn from the previous twelve years, when the State invested heavily in corporations and even in oil production and export. If such previous economic structure was similar to a state-led, corporatist but capitalist economy, perhaps the new one would similarly follow a specific model. The question of the study is: after the economic reforms in Mexico between 1982 and 2012, what is the VoC of Mexico? This is about the open market, international free trade and investment, privatisation and other economic reforms that began in Mexico in that period. This book also comments on some indicators of economic wellbeing, as these reflect the results of the reforms. Finally, it makes a critical assessment of those changes, before attempting to answer the research question.

It’s the newfound favorite of personalities such as Jacques Grange, Farida Khelfa, François Dumas, the Espírito Santo family, and Madonna, who shares photographs of taking her kids to the beach and horseback riding in the dunes of nearby Carvalhal on weekends. This fishing village boasts swaths of beaches, patchworks of rice paddies, and an ecosystem filled with storks and frogs, all a serene backdrop for the striking homes found there: rustic cabanas and thatched-roof huts reflecting the carefree lifestyle that has become Comporta’s hallmark. This distinctive setting challenges the minds of architects and designers, yielding unique spaces that delightfully blur the line between interior and exterior. Within these pages, the region’s characteristic cobalt blue is reflected from the sky and sea to the walls, shutters, and design pieces that adorn its homes, both picturesque and bold. Thirteen papers by archaeologists from North and South America on the archaeology of coastal Ecuador, Peru, and Chile.
