Les variations climatiques en Afrique de l'Ouest ont un impact parfois catastrophique, particulièrement au Sahel où les populations sont exposées aux aléas des ressources en eau. Comprendre le fonctionnement du climat et ses variabilités est une nécessité pour anticiper ce que pourraient être les conséquences du changement climatique et définir d'éventuelles stratégies d'adaptation. Ceci suppose de connaître les différents modes de variabilité atmosphérique et leurs conséquences sur les processus qui génèrent les pluies. Cette thèse porte sur la part de la variabilité des précipitations au Sahel qui peut être expliquée par la variabilité atmosphérique. L'objectif principal du travail vise à comprendre comment des perturbations du champs de vents à 700 hPa : les Ondes d'Est Africaines (AEWs), agissent sur la convection qui est elle-même à l'origine des précipitations. Un autre aspect consiste à étudier comment les AEWs s'insèrent dans la variabilité interannuelle et intra saisonnière du flux de mousson. Après avoir exposé les connaissances actuelles de la climatologie Ouest Africaine et expliqué la méthodologie développée pour étudier les AEWs, l'étude de la variabilité des précipitations a été faite. La modulation de la convection et des précipitations par les AEWs a été analysée et a permis de distinguer des secteurs propices et inhibiteurs aux fortes précipitations. L'impact des ondes sur la dynamique et la thermodynamique atmosphérique a été ètudié. Les conditions dans les basses couches atmosphériques se sont révélées importantes Ainsi, la variabilités intra saisonnière du flux de mousson et la connexion avec les AEWs et la convection a été analysée.

This Thematic Study is a joint venture between ICOMOS, the advisory body to UNESCO on cultural sites, and the International Astronomical Union. It presents an overall vision on astronomical heritage, attempts to identify what constitutes "outstanding universal significance to humankind" in relation to astronomy, and identifies broad issues that could arise in the assessment of cultural properties relating to astronomy. This is the first Thematic Study in any field of science heritage. It is elaborated using examples of properties from around the world, including some already on the World Heritage List or national Tentative Lists. The subject matter ranges from early prehistory to modern astrophysics and space heritage, and also prominently includes dark sky issues and modern observatory sites. An e-version of the Thematic Study was published in June 2010 in time to be presented to the 2010 meeting of UNESCO's World Heritage Committee, where it was duly approved. It has been circulated officially by the WHC to all of UNESCO's National Commissions.
