The second section on problems relating to jurisdiction and rights over living and non-living resources of ASEAN countries covers: Fishery development in individual ASEAN countries; Problems of ASEAN vis-à-vis fishing resources; Status of development of petroleum and gas in individual ASEAN states; Law and practice relating to the jurisdiction and rights over non-living resources in ocean areas adjacent to ASEAN states; Problems and potential conflict involving off-shore exploration and exploitation of oil and gas."--P. Development Problems of an Open-access Resource

Development Problems of an Open-access Resource PDF Author: Jin-Bee Ooi
Publisher: Institute of Southeast Asian
ISBN: 9813035463
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 74

Book Description
Developing countries have traditionally been highly dependent on their natural resources for conversion into capital for consumption and development purposes. There is, however, a limit to which some natural resources, notably biotic renewable resources, can be exploited as over-exploitation can lead to collapse and in the case of wildlife, extinction. This study focuses on the problems of exploiting an open-access renewable resource: the sea fisheries of Peninsular Malaysia. It traces the history of fisheries development in that country, and shows how open access to a rich resource can rapidly lead to overfishing and serious stock depletion. The various efforts of managing the fisheries are also discussed.

Market Power, Vertical Linkages, and Government Policy

Market Power, Vertical Linkages, and Government Policy PDF Author: Ishak Haji Omar
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 212

Book Description
Problems of agricultural marketing have long been of concern to policy-makers, especially in determining the relative roles to be played by the private and public sectors in improving market performance. This book is a comprehensive evaluation of the fish trade in Peninsular Malaysia, a business fraught with risks and uncertainties. It draws upon various economic theories and statistical tools to establish the market characteristics of the trade of a highly heterogeneous commodity in a multi-market distribution system. Intriguing features of the fish trade are identified, some of which are at divergence with the conventional wisdom. In the study, attention is first focused on the industrial structure framework, with special emphasis on, and modifications to, concepts that are of importance to fish marketing. Then, the structural features of the fish trade and its market conduct are established and government and co-operative intervention schemes evaluated. The final chapter synthesizes the findings across the board to gauge the overall competitiveness of the fish industry and makes policy suggestions for improving market performance.
