Improved management strategies are needed to increase yield production and quality. The study aimed to determine suitable cultural practices for improved corn production. Experiments were set up at Verona and Stoneville, Mississippi, from 2020 to 2022. Treatments included row configurations (single and twin-row), plant populations (79,000 and 99,000 seeds ha-1), and six combinations of nutrients with or without fungicide. The nutrients evaluated were two nitrogen rates 235 and 314 kg N ha-1, phosphorus 45 kg P ha-1, potassium 112 kg K ha-1, sulfur 22 kg S ha-1, and zinc 11 kg Zn ha-1, and fungicide at 272 ml ha-1. In trial 1 (Addition), nutrients were added incrementally, whereas in trial 2 (Deletion) nutrients were withheld in a stepwise manner. Within nutrient treatments, results were erratic among years and sites. Overall, producers must find a balance in terms of yield and profit by taking soil testing and fertilizer prices into consideration.

Guidelines, or recommendations, for nitrogen (N) management in the Corn Belt are important to corn producers because fertilizer N must be applied for profitable corn production, because profit margins are narrow, and because N fertilization has been linked to local and regional water quality problems. Producers rely on these recommendations because it has been impractical for individuals to identify optimal rates, times, and methods of N fertilization for corn. Precision farming technologies, however, enable organized networks of crop producers to evaluate management practices used on their farms and within regions. These technologies and on-farm trials were used to assess optimal rates of spring-applied and sidedressed N, assess the benefits of using a nitrification inhibitor, and assess the ability of injected liquid swine manure to supply N needed for corn growth. The results showed optimal rates of N were less than currently recommended rates, nitrification inhibitors did not increase profits for producers in central Iowa, and injected liquid swine manure at normal rates supplied adequate amounts of N for plant growth. The results suggest that current recommendations could be substantially improved. The results document that organized networks of producers working together can evaluate and improve nitrogen management and thereby increase their profits while reducing environmental problems associated with N fertilization.

Selection of economically optimal levels of nitrogen fertilization is an important farm management problem. Fertilization levels chosen will depend on agronomic and economic factors. Many farmers have already adopted or are considering adoption of no-tillage corn cultural practices. The objective of this publications was to determine the economically optimal levels of nitrogen fertilization for no-tillage and conventional tillage corn cultural practices. The economically optimal levels of fertilization presented on this publication were based on data collected form nitrogen rate by tillage experiments conducted by The University of Maryland Department of Agronomy at four research farms during 1979 to 1983. Corn yield response to nitrogen fertilization functions were estimated for each farm location, tillage system and year in which the experiment was conducted. The corn yield response to nitrogen and the economically optimal rates of nitrogen fertilization derived from the yield response functions varied according to farm location, cultural practice and year in which the experiment was conducted. Yield responses at certain locations exhibited large variations, while yield response at other locations were relatively consistent. Changes in yield response and/or the prices of nitrogen and corn may change the economically optimal rate of fertilization, however, large changes in nitrogen and corn prices may not lead to large changes in economically optimal rates of fertilization.

Adoption of nitrogen (N) management strategies to minimize gaseous N loss from agriculture while maintaining high yield production is increasingly important for an exponentially growing population. Agricultural management on poorly-drained claypan soils in the Midwestern U.S. make corn (Zea mays L.) production even more challenging due to the subsoil's low permeability, which may result in wetter soil conditions and relatively larger amounts of soil N[subscript 2]O emissions during the growing season. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of urea fertilizer placement with and without the addition of a nitrification inhibitor (NI) on corn yield, N use efficiency (NUE), and cumulative soil N[subscript 2]O emissions on a Northeastern Missouri claypan soil. The fertilizer strategies utilized in this study consisted of deep-banded urea (DB) or urea plus nitrapyrin [2-chloro-6-(trichloromethyl) pyridine] (DB+NI) at a depth of 20 cm compared to urea broadcast surface applied (SA) or incorporated to a depth of 8 cm (IA). The addition of a NI with deep-banded urea resulted in 27% greater apparent N recovery efficiency than all other N treatments. Additionally, DB+NI had 54 and 55% lower cumulative soil N[subscript 2]O emissions than IA and SA treatments in the two combined growing seasons. These results suggest that deep placement of urea with or without nitrapyrin is an effective management strategy for increasing corn yield and reducing N loss on a claypan soil.
