We read of the adventures of a Livingstone and a Stanley, giving no thought to the fact that they are repeating the adventures of La Salle and others, and opening to civilization and settlement that hitherto unknown continent, just as La Salle and his compe'ers opened a path through the unknown wilds of America. Then, as now, men were induced to undergo the fatigues and perils which are the lot of explorers, by motives of widely various character.
