Corn condensed distillers solubles (CDS) is a protein and energy dense by-product from dry-milled production of ethanol. Recent oil extraction has posed modifications to the nutrient profile of CDS, suggesting that de-oiled CDS needs to be re-evaluated in beef cattle diets. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of CDS in high-concentrate diets, forage-based diets, as well as evaluate the effects of CDS on diet digestibility and rumen fermentation parameters in forage-based diets. Feeding CDS in high-concentrate diets up to 20% of the diet DM or in combination with wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) improved performance and resulted in greater energy value compared to corn. Feeding values of 20% CDS or the combination of 16% CDS and 20% WDGS were 147 and 129% compared to corn, respectively. Feeding CDS in forage-based diets up to 40% of the diet DM diminished performance and resulted in a lesser energy value compared to corn. Linear decreases were observed in total tract digestibility of NDF and the acetate to propionate ratio in rumen fluid. Double-cropped forages following corn harvest offer livestock producers an opportunity to extend their grazing season on high quality forage in the fall. Additionally, crop producers may benefit from the implementation of grazing animals due to added soil nutrients and removal of residue. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of double-cropped oats following corn silage (CS) or high-moisture corn (HMC) on calf gains, forage production, and subsequent cash crop yields. Oats seeded after CS produced more forage biomass than oats seeded after HMC. Both treatments produced high quality oats (22% CP, 39% NDF, and 24% ADF averaged across treatments). Calf gains were greater grazing oats following CS compared to HMC at 1.10 and 0.84 kg / d, respectively. Across 1-yr of data, subsequent cash crop yields were not different for HMC and soybeans with increased CS yields in both covered/grazed and non-covered/non-grazed treatments compared to the covered/non-grazed treatment..

Integrating crop and livestock systems leads to opportunities to utilize land resources; however, crop producers focus on grain yields and ground cover, while livestock producers see opportunity to graze corn residue or annual forages. After wheat harvest or corn silage harvest, above ground forage production for brassica mixes and oats is greater than forage oats or oat production after high moisture corn harvest. Grazing steers on forage crops after grain harvest provides moderate gains. While annual forages provide good quality forages, corn residue grazing and utilization is still a cost-effective feedstuff for cattle producers. In the short term, grain yields do not differ for treatments that were baled, grazed, or not baled or grazed. Residue ground cover after grazing is greater than after baling. An alternative way to utilize the baled corn residue is treating corn residue with CaO; however, the energy value needs to be improved, so addition of components such as distillers solubles or crude glycerin could apply. Treating corn residue with CaO and utilizing distillers solubles, crude glycerin, and treated corn residue as a replacement for distillers grains in a brome hay diet reduced steer ADG. Combining protein, solubles and glycerin components with treated corn stover does not provide the same performance response as modified distillers grains plus solubles. Finding ways to integrate livestock and crop production is a way to become better stewards of the resources available.

Every year, producers select replacement heifers with the intention that these heifers are the future of their cow herd. Producers normally select replacement heifers at weaning based on weight and structure. When selecting heifers at weaning, producers risk not selecting heifers that would be productive cows based on their criteria. By delaying the selection of replacements, it will allow producers to increase the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate replacement prospects. The corn dry-milling industry produces byproducts that can be economical supplements to growing cattle on forage. An experiment evaluated an alternative heifer system utilizing distiller grains as an energy source to heifers. A distiller grain supplement was fed ad-libitum to heifers on pasture to maximize gain. Heifers consuming the distiller grain supplement were able to increase their BW while increasing the stocking rate in the pasture. Supplemented heifers were able to reach their targeted harvest point before nonsupplemented heifers. This alternative production system could provide a viable option for marketing heifers in a yearling or cow/calf enterprise.
