Ohio has been the site of various waves of energy-related resource extraction, the most recent being the proliferation of unconventional oil and gas wells throughout the eastern region of the state. This development has garnered significant public attention and raised concerns about the potential for contamination of surface water resources. Wells that utilize high-volume horizontal hydraulic fracturing (HVHHF) yield enormous quantities of highly saline produced waters. Despite the implementation of various safety protocols, releases of these waste waters into surface waters has occurred. HVHHF associated development is taking place in broad swaths of the state of Ohio. Many of these areas are not subject to rigorous, ongoing water chemistry monitoring. This dearth of data prompts two important questions: 1) How do we assess contamination where no background water chemistry data exist to indicate what constitutes the “normal” range for these water resources? and, 2) If contamination has indeed taken place, how can we attribute the origin of the contamination where many of these energy-related resource extraction industries coincide? The results of this study indicate that there is potential to use otolith trace element chemistry to differentiate between otoliths collected from fish exposed to different types of energy-related resource extraction industry operations. Specifically, significant variation of Mg, Ba, and Sr concentrations existed in otoliths collected from fish exposed to acid mine drainage compared with those collected from fish sampled from the reference site. The concentrations of these elements were not sufficient to differentiate either of the other two treatment types in this experiment and no other criteria were identified by which a group could be segregated from the rest of the sample. No distinct trends in changing otolith trace element composition through time were observed at any of the sites in this experiment. Further research may identify other meaningful differences in otolith trace element composition that show potential to discern between contamination types associated with energy-related resource extraction.

This group was compared to higher-element abundance groups and to fossil otoliths found in Native American middens on Weedon Island, FL using nonparametric multivariate analysis of variance (NP-MANOVA) and Canonical Analysis of Principal Coordinates (CAP) to determine similarities of modern fish groups and an ancient baseline. Growth rates were then compared to the microchemistry groups to determine if there are any correlations with growth rates and otolith trace metal compositions. This study did not find any correlation between the Deepwater Horizon oil spill event and either Red Drum otolith microchemistry or growth. Otolith oil-metal concentrations did not vary significantly among study years, and there was no relationship between microchemistry and otolith-based growth rate. While there was decreased growth in 2010, the decreased growth appeared to be due to unusually cold winters during that year. Oil metal concentrations measured in the otoliths indicated continuous metal exposure rather than exposure to an episodic oil-spill event. This study also verified the use of archaeological otoliths as a viable microchemical baseline for pre-industrial otoliths. Preserved otolith material had very low hydrocarbon-associated metal concentrations, which is expected in otoliths that were formed before the period of heavy anthropogenic influence on coastal waters. This study represents a novel effort to compare pre-industrial-age microchemistry to the microchemistry of fish collected from impacted areas following a large oil spill.

Stable isotopes are used frequently in biogeochemistry and ecology to identify the use and movement of material within ecosystems and around the world. The isotopic composition of organic matter changes in predictable ways and often those changes are preserved as the elements cycle through space, time and trophic levels. Analysis of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur stable isotopes has become a common tool in aquatic stream ecology to help reveal the complex interactions and processes that occur beneath the water in these dynamic systems. In this thesis, I explore patterns of stable isotope composition of periphyton and macroinvertebrates in a wilderness stream network and investigate correlations to natural environmental heterogeneity. Chapter 1 explores the spatial and temporal variability in nitrogen, carbon and sulfur stable isotope values of aquatic biota, observed trophic discrimination, and correlations with environmental landscape characteristics. I found that the nitrogen, carbon and sulfur isotopic composition of periphyton and macroinvertebrates does vary considerably in this watershed and that this variability can be parceled out and attributed to a few major factors, specifically species and site. Correlations with wildfire and geology appear to be more important parameters in predicting nitrogen and sulfur stable isotopes, respectively, than spawning salmon in this watershed. In Chapter 2, I utilize creative nonfiction narratives to inform non-scientific audiences on stream ecology, stable isotopes and cross-ecosystem subsidies, fostering holistic ecosystem thinking and attention to waterways as multi-directional corridors. This interdisciplinary approach to scientific research and communication effectively conveys a message to readers, increasing knowledge of stable isotope ecology and how understanding the associated variability and environmental heterogeneity promises to improve the utility of stable isotopes in measuring connectivity of disparate ecosystems.
