Use of Vegetation Maps to Infer on the Ecological Suitability of Species Using Central and Western Kenya as an Example: Description of potential natural vegetation types for central and western Kenya

Book Description
This document provides an analysis of a potential natural vegetation (PNV) map of South Western Kenya. The objective of the analysis was to evaluate potential vegetation maps as a tool for predicting spatial variation in climate, eco-regions and in distributions of indigenous woody species. We describe the contents of the original map and of the digitised synthesised map. We then analyse how well the different vegetation types can be discerned by climatic parameters and we discuss the implications of the analysis. In two accompanying reports we, respectively, discuss the process of providing lists of indigenous tree species for the different PNV types (DE7) and explore in greater detail the relationship between environmental characteristics and PNV types.

Use of Vegetation Maps to Infer on the Ecological Suitability Af Species Using Central and Western Kenya as an Example - Part II

Book Description
In accompanying documents (DE6 and Use of vegetation maps .. Part III, in prep.), we investigate published literature on differences between vegetation types and examine patterns of climatic, edaphic and topographic interpolated surface layers. These investigations revealed that floristic differences explain in part how the PNV types can be differentiated. Here we provide greater detail on how PNV types differ floristically. We describe the methods used and the degree of reliability and present species lists by PNV type. We discuss the use of the tentative species distribution maps in the broader context of statistical modelling approaches. Finally we discuss the potential and limitations of using the PNV.

Indicators of the genetic diversity of trees – State, pressure, benefit and response
Author: Graudal, L., Loo, J., Fady, B., Vendramin, G., Aravanopoulos, F.A., Baldinelli, G., Bennadji, Z., Ramamonjisoa, L., Changtragoon, S. and Kjær, E.D.

ISBN: 9251337594
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 92
Book Description
This study, prepared within the ambit of The State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources, reviews issues related to the development of indicators for tree genetic diversity. It includes a historical account of the development of science-based indicators for tree genetic diversity that embrace ecological surrogates for genetic diversity, the genealogical approach, genetic monitoring of management units, the use of molecular markers, as well as relevant experience from other organisms and policy processes. It also includes a section on relevant data, data sources, and databases. Finally, the study proposes a set of four operational indicators for monitoring tree genetic diversity. The proposed indicators could support efforts towards sustainable forest management, as well as the development of indicators for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
