Book Description
Extensive research on the agronomic potential and actual effectiveness of phosphate rocks (PRs) as sources of phosphorus has been carried out in Africa, Asia, Latin America and elsewhere. This publication brings together a wide range of available information on key issues regarding the use of PRs in agriculture, including world deposits; characteristics of sources; evaluation methodologies for direct application of PR (DAPR); analysis of biophysical and farming factors; development and use of decision-support systems for DAPR; soil P testing for PR application; available technologies for enhancing the agronomic effectiveness of indigenous PR sources; environmental issues; legislation guidelines; and future research priorities.

The Potential Use of Rock Phosphate in Sudan for Sustainable Agricultural Production

The Potential Use of Rock Phosphate in Sudan for Sustainable Agricultural Production PDF Author: Inaam Saad

ISBN: 1662461224
Category : Science

Pages : 97

Book Description
Agriculture is primarily the uppermost important sector in Sudan, contributing significantly to the country’s national economy. However, in spite of the country’s vast cultivated area, productivity remains very low. The declining agricultural production is indicative of the need for adopting sustainable agricultural development approaches to the achieve country’s food security. The attainment of sustainable agricultural production will require the proper use of all available resources such as land, water, and mineral resources, including the phosphate rock reserves. Rock phosphate deposits of potential economic value occur at more than a hundred locations in sub-Saharan African countries, including Sudan. Several geological surveys in Sudan have proven the occurrence of abundant resources of phosphate deposits in different locations in the country. For advocating the initiation of rock phosphate mining and phosphate fertilizer industry in Sudan, this book delivers sufficient and validated information on the underutilized resource of rock phosphate in Sudan and exposes its potential role in the development of sustainable agricultural production. The book presents an accurate image of the current status and prospective scenario in relation to rock phosphate deposits and the potential establishment of the fertilizer industry in Sudan. The book presents a comprehensive literature review on the history, advantages, and impacts of using rock phosphate. It also sheds light on the rock phosphate deposits in Sudan, their locations, and geological and agricultural quality as compared to rock phosphate from other global resources. The book presents two detailed case studies on assessing the agronomic value of Kurun and Uro rock phosphate rocks as fertilizers and their environmental impact assessment. The book then highlights the potential benefits of phosphate mining and the initiation of the phosphate fertilizer industry in Sudan, proposes a plan for achieving that goal, and presents recommendations to bring the Sudanese phosphate fertilizer industry to life.

Alleviating Soil Fertility Constraints to Increased Crop Production in West Africa

Book Description
Tropical Africa escaped from the glaciers that covered the temperate parts of the world during the Ice Age. The legacy is that most of the parent materials of the soils of tropical Africa are old, highly weathered and devoid of bases and phosphate-bearing minerals. Traditional farming systems which were relatively stable and sustainable relied on long fallow periods after one to two years of cropping to maintain the productive capacity of the soils. In recent times and especially in densely populated areas, a sizeable class of 'landless' farmers have begun to cultivate marginal lands or to invade the 'forest reserves' thereby exacerbating the problems of land and environ mental degradation. of soil fertility that will facilitate the production of adequate quantities of the principle Maintaining a level staples has become a major challenge to agricultural scientists in tropical Africa. To increase the nutrient supplying power of soils requires the inputs of fertilizers. These can be organic or inorganic. The efficiency with which these externally supplied inputs can increase agricultural production and reduce soil and environmental deterioration is dependent on the ability of scientists to determine the right types and quantities of the products to apply to each soil, crop and cropping system as well as the ability of farmers to acquire requisite farm manage ment skills.
