The objective of this project was to acquire state-of-the art laboratory instrumentation that will improve the research and education programs in chemistry, biology, and environmental sciences at the bachelor's and master's levels at Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico (PCUPR). Introduction of modem chemical instrumentation in the chemistry, biology, and environmental science curricula provides a valuable experience for students and stimulation for the faculty. The major concern now facing the chemistry, biology, and environmental science faculty at PCUPR is the inability to demonstrate in the laboratory some of the most important techniques in environmental analysis such as Induced Couple Plasma (ICP) Spectroscopy, High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and UV/V is Spectroscopy that are emphasized in lectures. The funds requested in this Research Agreement with the U.S. Army Research Office were used to purchase a Perkin Elmer Optima 3000XL Induced Couple Plasma (ICP) Spectrometer, a Perkin Elmer Lambda 20 UV/V is Spectrophotometer, a Hewlett-Packard 1100 High Performance Liquid Chromatographs, the corresponding accessories and other small analytical chemistry and environmental sciences equipment. It is no question that the acquisition of all these instruments has improved both laboratory education and undergraduate research in the departments of Biology and Chemistry at Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico. Furthermore, the number and quality of under-represented and low income Puerto Rican students that will be Involved in science and engineering will increase as a result of this project funded by the U.S. Department of Defense under the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

Diese Studie untersuchte die Lernziele des Laborpraktikums Allgemeine Chemie für Lehramtsstudierende im ersten Semester sowie Faktoren für den Kurserfolg, um daraus Aussagen über den Stellenwert von Laborpraktika in der universitären Bildung, insbesondere für langfristigen Studienerfolg, abzuleiten. Dazu wurde ein theoretisches Modell zu Grunde gelegt, welches das Vorwissen der Studierenden und die Lernzielpassung zwischen Studierenden und Lehrenden als zwei entscheidende Faktoren für Kurserfolg berücksichtigt. Constantly high student dropout rates in STEM subjects at German universities, which could be the result of low course success in introductory laboratory courses among other things and increasing criticism about their quality and effectiveness necessitate these laboratory courses to be examined thoroughly. This study investigated the learning goals of the General Chemistry laboratory course for first-year students in teacher training and factors for course success in order to make statements about the significance of laboratory courses for university education, particularly for long-term study success. For this purpose, a theoretical model that assumes the students prior knowledge and learning goal alignment between students and their lab instructors to be two defining factors for lab course success was used as a framework.

Instrumental techniques of analysis have now moved from the confines of the chemistry laboratory to form an indispensable part of the analytical armoury of many workers involved in the biological sciences. It is now quite out of the question to considcr a laboratory dealing with the analysis of biological materials that is not equipped with an extensive range of instrumentation. Recent years have also seen a dramatic improvement in the ease with which such instruments can be used, and the quality and quantity of the analytical data that they can produce. This is due in no sm all part to the ubiquitous use of microprocessors and computers for instrumental control. However, under these circumstances there is areal danger of the analyst adopting a 'black box' mentality and not treating the analytical data produced in accordance with the limitations that may be inherent in the method used. Such a problem can only be overcome if the operator is fully aware of both the theoretical and instrumental constraints relevant to the technique in question. As the complexity and sheer volume of material in undergraduate courses increases, there is a tendency to reduce the amount of fundamental material that is taught prior to embarking on the more applied aspects. This is nowhere more apparent than in the teaching of instrumental techniques of analysis.
