Book Description
Laboratory tests with irregular waves to determine wave runup characteristics and armor stability of riprap revetments are discussed. Tests include conventional, plane, 1 on 2 slope revetments, and conventional revetments fronted by rubble berms. Rubble berms tested reduced the maximum runup by rather modest amounts, typically around 10 percent, but produced substantial improvement in the armor stability. These effects are discussed and quantified. This study demonstrates the need for a reliable irregular wave run- up gage for laboratory studies of rough, porous coastal structures Berm, Revetment, Damage, Riprap stability, Overtopping, Runup.

Handbook of Geotechnical Investigation and Design Tables
Author: Burt G. Look
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 020394660X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 356
Book Description
This practical handbook of properties for soils and rock contains, in a concise tabular format, the key issues relevant to geotechnical investigations, assessments and designs in common practice. In addition, there are brief notes on the application of the tables. These data tables are compiled for experienced geotechnical professionals who require a reference document to access key information. There is an extensive database of correlations for different applications. The book should provide a useful bridge between soil and rock mechanics theory and its application to practical engineering solutions. The initial chapters deal with the planning of the geotechnical investigation, the classification of the soil and rock properties and some of the more used testing is then covered. Later chapters show the reliability and correlations that are used to convert that data in the interpretative and assessment phase of the project. The final chapters apply some of these concepts to geotechnical design. This book is intended primarily for practicing geotechnical engineers working in investigation, assessment and design, but should provide a useful supplement for postgraduate courses.

Design And Construction Of Berm Breakwaters
Author: Jentsje Van Der Meer
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814749621
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 350
Book Description
Modern design of berm breakwaters began about thirty years ago. However, to date, there has been a lack of a well-established, formal design methodology on berm breakwaters. The authors Dr Jentsje van der Meer and Sigurdur Sigurdarson combine over 40 years of collective experience working with breakwaters to put forward a design framework in Design and Construction of Berm Breakwaters; covering the science and design practices of berm breakwater structures. The original design consisted of mass armoured berms that reshaped into statically stable S-shaped slopes. The design was adopted in Iceland and eventually led to a development with more stable structures by using available rock sizes, large rock, and more rock gradings than just 'small rock (core)' and 'large rock (berm)'. This more stable and only partly reshaping structure is called the Icelandic-type berm breakwater.Written for researchers and practitioners, the volume consists of chapters on geometrical designs of the berm breakwater cross-section, including berm reshaping and wave overtopping, quarry and project management, as well as blasting and sorting techniques, designs for various wave conditions and available rock classes, and case studies of already constructed berm breakwaters.
