Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Medicine - Internal Medicine, grade: 1,5, , language: English, abstract: In recent years, the popularity of vitamin D has risen in the alternative medicine spectrum as a “universal” substance for all sorts of diseases. Although many of the claims cannot be backed by scientific evidence, strong evidence still demonstrates the beneficial effects of vitamin D for treating various conditions that are not directly related to hypovitaminosis. Currently, there is evidence that demonstrates that the supplementation of vitamin D can prevent or relieve upper respiratory infections and endemic influenza. Additionally, herpesviruses are responsive to treatments that incorporate vitamin D, and antibody titers seem to be higher in individuals with higher vitamin D levels. For viral hepatitis, viral DNA load and seasonal fluctuating vitamin D levels seem to correlate with each other. Regarding Covid-19, there is a clear correlation between the disease’s course and duration and vitamin D serum levels. However, it remains unclear whether low vitamin D levels can increase an individual’s susceptibility to Covid-19 or whether Covid-19 causes low vitamin D levels. Furthermore, it is unclear whether a part of Covid-19’s typical symptoms could be caused by a vitamin D deficiency. To uncover high-quality evidence regarding this topic, the author proposed a clinical trial to evaluate the effects of vitamin D supplementation on Covid-19 hospitalisation rates.

Considering growing concerns of the world’s authorities on the spreading of novel corona virus (Covid-19), in this paper we review the evidences showing major role of Vitamin D3 in human immune system and its potential use for novel corona virus treatment. Our argument is based on research finding that corona virus has viral envelope glycoproteins. In this regard, Vitamin D3 proves to offer various beneficial effects, including immunomodulatory effect, in order to break the glycoproteins envelope of the virus. One of the greatest benefit of vitamin D3 is the fact that it is easy to get 10,000 - 20,000 IU of daily intake requirement, by sunbathing for more or less twenty minutes. Such a method is likely applicable in many tropical countries. Therefore, we submit a view which can be rephrased as follows: “Twenty minutes sunbathing a day may likely keep Covid-19 away”.

Recent research about the influence of vitamin D (VD) deficiency on the occurrence of viral infections suggests that children with VD deficiency have attenuated immune response. This, in turn, increases the severity of viral infections, especially those of the respiratory tract, that show a typical seasonality pattern during the winter months. Despite the immunization of children at the global level, outbreaks of influenza do frequently occur. Over the past months, we have witnessed that the explosive pandemic of the corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused significant mortality in some countries. Numerous studies have shown that VD deficiency is increasingly prevalent worldwide, and that it is potentially associated with the onset of viral infections. Persons with hypovitaminosis D and subsequent secondary immunodeficiencies ought to be identified and treated, while preventive supplementation of VD should be recommended to the general population to avoid VD deficiency during the winter. In this way, the burden of viral infections on population health and economy could be reduced. This paper also reviews the influence of VD on infections caused by hepatitis B and C viruses, human papillomavirus, Epstein,ÄìBarr virus, Human herpes virus 6, herpes simplex virus, and human immunodeficiency virus.
