U.S. Ownership of Firms in Canada

U.S. Ownership of Firms in Canada PDF Author: Steven Globerman
Publisher: C.D. Howe Research Institute ; Washington : National Planning Association
ISBN: 9780888060525
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 108

Book Description
From the Foreword: On a per capita basis, Canadians have made more direct investments in the United States than Americans have in Canada. Because of the vast disparity in the overall size of the two economies, however, total U.S. direct investment has reached such a high level in Canada that it is a topic of considerable controversy in the bilateral relationship. This two-part volume focuses upon the economic dimensions of this controversy. In the first part of this volume, many of the issues that have been raised about U.S. direct investment in Canada are analyzed in order to examine how, and with what consequences, such investment affects the degree to which the two economies have become linked. The second part contains a review and analysis of Canada's recent steps to control foreign-direct-investment inflows through the Foreign Investment Review Agency (FIRA).

The Vanishing Country

The Vanishing Country PDF Author: Mel Hurtig
Publisher: National Geographic Books
ISBN: 0771042175
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Is it all over for Canada? There are a number of thoughtful people who think so. Mel Hurtig, however, believes there is still a chance to reassert Canadian independence. But first, Canadians need to understand how much has been lost. Our politicians are not telling us. Our business leaders certainly are not telling us. And our media definitely are not telling us. The border dividing Canada and the United States has never been more fragile. Canada is vanishing. The evidence is available to those who know where to look for it. It can be found in reports published by Statistics Canada, the OECD, the World Bank, the United Nations and its affiliated organizations, and by a variety of research organizations including the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. In characteristically pungent prose, Mel Hurtig reveals the truth about health care, the banks, taxation, newspaper conglomerates, political funding, social spending, decentralization, privatization, globalization, sovereignty, competitiveness, Americanization, the war on drugs, corporate concentration, and the quality of life in Canada. He concludes with chapters on the concentration of ownership in the Canadian media, the need for electoral and parliamentary reform, the necessity of asserting Canadian sovereignty, and a final, positive chapter entitled “The Good Country.”

Concentrated Corporate Ownership

Concentrated Corporate Ownership PDF Author: Randall K. Morck
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226536823
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 404

Book Description
Standard economic models assume that many small investors own firms. This is so in most large U.S. firms, but wealthy individuals or families generally hold controlling blocks in smaller U.S. firms and in all firms in most other countries. Given this, the lack of theoretical and empirical work on tightly held firms is surprising. What corporate governance problems arise in tightly held firms? How do these differ from corporate governance problems in widely held firms? How do control blocks arise and how are they maintained? How does concentrated ownership affect economic growth? How should we regulate tightly held firms? Drawing together leading scholars from law, economics, and finance, this volume examines the economic and legal issues of concentrated ownership and their impact on a shifting global economy.
