El rasgo común a los seis ensayos que componen este volumen es el deseo de formular una teoría del urbanismo capaz de dar cuenta de la forma en que la ciudad (la planificación urbana) refleja la desigualdad social, contribuye a reproducirla o incluso la refuerza y profundiza. Ahora bien, si bien los seis ensayos reflejan una misma preocupación teórica, su problemática se va transformando, mostrando una trayectoria que arranca de planteamientos “liberales” para llegar a planteamientos socialistas. Así, desde el primer ensayo hasta el último asistimos a la transformación del horizonte teórico del autor, al que la necesidad de explicar las relaciones entre desigualdad social y estructura urbana obliga a recurrir a los conceptos del análisis materialista marxiano: valor de uso y valor de cambio, excedente y plusvalor. Hasta concluir: “De la historia hemos heredado un urbanismo basado en la explotación... Queda para la teoría revolucionaria explorar el camino que va de un urbanismo basado en la explotación a un urbanismo apropiado para la especie humana.
