Book Description
This literature search and records review of the Upper Mississippi River Basin (River Mile 857.6, above St. Anthony Falls, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Minnesota to Lock & Dam 10, (Guttenberg, Iowa) was authorized by the St. Paul District Corps of Engineers as part of its master plan for the 9-foot navigation project. The objectives of the investigation were to: 1. conduct a comprehensive review of existing records and review published and unpublished literature; 2. provide an evaluation of recorded cultural resources; and 3. prepare a detailed technical and popular report. Site-specific information was compiled for both historic and prehistoric sites from state agencies in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and from various local and regional institutions. More than 1,000 historically or architecturally significant sites and districts, and more than 1,400 prehistoric archaeological components were recorded and plotted on base maps. From the site configurations and from other data collected during the course of the records and literature review, a narrative framework for the interpretation of historic and prehistoric sites was developed. Recommendations to enhance the management of the archaeological and historical data base were provided. Within the study area of Pool 3, thirty five properties are considered to possess historic or architectural merit. Of these, two are identified as districts, the East Second Street Commercial District and the West Second Street Residential District, both in Hastings, Minnesota. Sixty-seven archaeological sites were encountered in the study area during the course of archive and literature investigations. (Author).

The total historic/architectural site inventory numbers only 37 locations. Archaeological sites, based on the current available data, are more numerous in Pool 7 environs. A total of 97 sites are listed in various archival and literature sources. (Author).

Apparently historical and architectural indentification of properties in the Pool 9 study area has not been extensive. Only 3 properties have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a fourth is pending. In addition, the total number listed in the inventory is 81 historical/architectural sites; the vast majority which are located within the limits of the City of Lansing, Iowa. The total number of archaeological sites is slightly larger, the inventory list totaling 91 known occurrences. (Author).

Book Description
This literature search and records review of the Upper Mississippi River Basin (River mile 857.6, above St. Anthony Falls, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota to Lock and Dam 10, Guttenberg, Iowa) was authorized by the St. Paul District Corps of Engineers as part of its master plan for the 9-foot navigation project. The objectives of the investigation were to: (1) conduct a comprehensive review of existing records and review published and unpublished literature; (2) provide an evaluation of recorded cultural resources; and (3) prepare a detailed technical and popular report. Volume 11 focuses on Pool 10, Guttenberg Iowa. A staggering 333 archaeological sites have been reported in the study are in the Pool 10 environs. This is clearly an artifact of both collector and research bias and should not be interpreted as a realistic differential density of archaeological sites relative to pools 1-9. A single historic district, the St. Feriole Archaeological and Historic District in Prairie du Chien, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and two additional districts in the City of Guttenberg, Iowa are currently pending.
