The Pediatric Upper Extremity

The Pediatric Upper Extremity PDF Author: Joshua M. Abzug
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9781461485131
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Sub-specialization within pediatric orthopedics is growing, in part due to the development of free-standing children's hospitals and the desire by patients and their parents to have "experts" care for them. We are at the forefront of a trend in physicians classifying themselves as pediatric upper extremity surgeons. Numerous pediatric hospitals now have or are recruiting physicians to focus their practice in this area. Historically, these issues were treated by general orthopedic surgeons, adult hand surgeons, pediatric orthopedic surgeons, or plastic surgeons. However, none of these professionals treat the entirety of pediatric upper extremity pathology, and no single reference has focused on the treatment of the pediatric upper extremity as a whole. For example, fractures have typically been written about in pediatric textbooks, while tendon and nerve injuries are covered in adult hand textbooks. This textbook is a comprehensive, illustrated reference that discusses all aspects of the pediatric upper extremity, from embryology and functional development to nerve injuries, trauma, tumors, burns, sports injuries and more.

Modern Functional Evaluation Methods for Muscle Strength and Gait Analysis

Modern Functional Evaluation Methods for Muscle Strength and Gait Analysis PDF Author: Andrea Ancillao
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319674374
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 133

Book Description
This book reviews in detail the history of motion analysis, including the earliest attempts to capture, freeze, study and reproduce motion. The state-of-the-art technology in use today, i.e. optoelectronic systems, is then discussed, as motion capture now plays an important role in clinical decisions regarding the diagnosis and treatment of motor pathologies from the perspective of evidence based medicine. After reviewing previous experiments, the book discusses two modern research projects, providing detailed descriptions of the methods used and the challenges that arose in the context of designing the experiments. In these projects, advanced signal processing and motion capture techniques were employed in order to design: (i) a protocol for the validation and quality assurance of clinical strength measurements; (ii) an algorithm for interpreting clinical gait analysis data; and (iii) a number of user-friendly software tools that can be used in clinical settings to process dat a and to aggregate the results into reports. In closing, a thorough discussion of the results is presented from a contextual standpoint.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy PDF Author: Mintaze Kerem Gunel
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 9535126482
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
Nowadays, cerebral palsy (CP) rehabilitation, along with medical and surgical interventions in children with CP, leads to better motor and postural control and can ensure ambulation and functional independence. In achieving these improvements, many modern practices may be used, such as comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment, clinical decision making, multilevel surgery, botulinum toxin applications, robotic ambulation applications, treadmill, and other walking aids to increase the quality and endurance of walking. Trainings are based on neurodevelopmental therapy, muscle training and strength applications, adaptive equipment and orthotics, communication, technological solves, and many others beyond the scope of this book. In the years of clinical and academic experiences, children with cerebral palsy have shown us that the world needs a book to give clinical knowledge to health professionals regarding these important issue. This book is an attempt to fulfill and to give ''current steps'' about CP. The book is intended for use by physicians, therapists, and allied health professionals who treat/rehabilitate children with CP. We focus on the recent concepts in the treatment of body and structure problems and describe the associated disability, providing suggestions for further reading. All authors presented the most frequently used and accepted treatment methods with scientifically proven efficacy and included references at the end of each chapter.

International Handbook of Occupational Therapy Interventions

International Handbook of Occupational Therapy Interventions PDF Author: Ingrid Söderback
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319081411
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 900

Book Description
Advanced therapies and technologies, new service delivery methods, and care upgrades in underserved areas are translating into improved quality of life for millions with disabilities. Occupational therapy parallels this progress at the individual level, balancing short-term recovery and adaptation with long-term independence and well-being. This Second Edition of the International Handbook of Occupational Therapy Interventions builds on its ground-breaking predecessor by modelling current clinical standards rooted in scientific evidence-based practice. Its interventions are applied to a diverse range of client disabilities, with many new or rewritten chapters on workplace and vehicle accommodations, smart home technologies, end-of-life planning, and other salient topics. New introductory chapters spotlight core competencies in the field, from assessing client needs and choosing appropriate interventions to evaluating programs and weighing priorities. And for increased educational value, interactive case studies allow readers an extra avenue for honing clinical reasoning and decision-making skills. Of particular note is a new chapter providing a taxonomy—the Occupational Therapy Intervention Framework—and a validation study of its categories and concepts, delineating the occupational therapist’s roles and the expected outcomes. Intervention areas featured in the Handbook include: ● Adaptive interventions, OTs manage and facilitate clients’ adaptations. ● Learning interventions, OTs teach and the clients learn or relearn. ● Enabling interventions, OTs enable clients to be meaningfully occupied. ● Preventing interventions, OTs prevent ill-health and promote clients’ ability to sustain health in daily life. The Second Edition of the International Handbook of Occupational Therapy Interventions is career-affirming reading for all members of rehabilitation teams, including occupational and physical therapists and rehabilitation nurses. Students intending to enter this growing field and professionals working toward its continued improvement will find it useful and inspiring.
