Up Till Now

Up Till Now PDF Author: William Shatner
Publisher: Macmillan
ISBN: 1429937971
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 388

Book Description
After almost sixty years as an actor, William Shatner has become one of the most beloved entertainers in the world. And it seems as if Shatner is everywhere. In Up Till Now, Shatner sits down with readers and offers the remarkable, full story of his life and explains how he got to be, well, everywhere. It was the original Star Trek series, and later its films, that made Shatner instantly recognizable, called by name---or at least by Captain Kirk's name---across the globe. But Shatner neither began nor has ended his career with that role. From the very start, he took his skills as an actor and put them to use wherever he could. He straddled the classic world of the theater and the new world of television, whether stepping in for Christopher Plummer in Shakespeare's Henry V or staring at "something on the wing" in a classic episode of The Twilight Zone. And since then, he's gone on to star in numerous successful shows, such as T.J. Hooker,Rescue 911, and Boston Legal. William Shatner has always been willing to take risks for his art. What other actor would star in history's first---and probably only---all-Esperanto-language film? Who else would share the screen with thousands of tarantulas, release an album called Has Been, or film a racially incendiary film in the Deep South during the height of the civil rights era? And who else would willingly paramotor into a field of waiting fans armed with paintball guns, all waiting for a chance to stun Captain...er, Shatner? In this touching and very funny autobiography, William Shatner's Up Till Now reveals the man behind these unforgettable moments, and how he's become the worldwide star and experienced actor he is today. "It is now Bill Shatner's universe---we just live in it."---New York Daily News

Chas and Dave

Chas and Dave PDF Author: Chas Hodges
Publisher: Kings Road Publishing
ISBN: 1857828267
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 255

Book Description
Bursting onto the music scene in the 70's, Chas 'n' Dave released songs that spoke about life in London, using their own accents rather than the fashionable but fake transatlantic twang. They knew that if they wrote and sang about their own experience rather than simply making up the bollocks that was normally expected then people would be interested. With hits like "Gertcha", "Rabbit", "The Sideboard Song" and "Margate", they created a sound that was uniquely British and rockin' to boot. What most people don't know is that both Chas and Dave had previous careers, playing with the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, nor the stories about getting nicked fishing, getting cracked onto by dodgy producers, going barmy locked in recording studios, playing with the Beatles and generally getting pissed and having a laugh. If you've ever wondered what makes this legendary duo tick (or even which one is bloody which) then this is the book for you!

Book Description
This translation of Kafka has a dual purpose, for starters it intends to provide English readers with a better translation: that Kafka's prose should find a more fitting analogy in 'modern (American) English' whereby it should come to life to a greater degree, and that his underlying philosophy-and I say philosophy in the greater sense-thus, should be grasped more readily. The second purpose is to explore issues regarding translation per se: what is the proper role of the translator? and why are so many translations done so poorly? The five stories included in this book have been carefully selected to present Kafka's literary genius in its historical genesis: from Metamophosis (1915), Report to the Academy (1917), In the Penal Colony (1919), The Burrow (1923/24) - to Kafka's "last word" Josephine the Songstress or The Mouse Folk which was written shortly before Kafka's death in 1924. This book also contains a short postscript on the art of translation that argues against the current modus operandi of translation theory, indeed, it goes so far as to quote from Kafka's diaries as well as from Schliermacher and early Roman translators on the responsibility of the translator to capture the spirit of the work in an imaginative manner.

Book Description
Winner, 2017 NM/AZ Book Awards "All She Wanted Was a Gold Band—What She Got Was a Tin Star" For as long as she could remember, Maud Overstreet figured she’d grow up, get married, have a house with a white picket fence and a brood of kids. Now, in 1872, she’s tired of being the bank president’s spinster daughter and equally tired of washing, ironing and cleaning. When, out of the blue, Dry Creek’s town council offers her the job of replacement sheriff, she accepts. And her sheltered world explodes. For the first time, Maud enters a saloon, tastes whiskey, learns to shoot, learns to ride a horse and drive a stagecoach, arrests people, and leads men in search parties. Yet she still has time to dream about her long-errant boyfriend, Elijah J. Goodman, off—somewhere—for the past few years. She is convinced they will marry when he returns and hopes it will be soon. But the discovery of gold brings all sorts of unsavory characters to her town, including the threat of the notorious James Mooney Gang. There are rumors of an impending bank robbery. Maud enlists the help of Mayor Seth Critoli, but it’s up to her to save Dry Creek from disaster. "A light-hearted look at a woman who gets a job nobody else wants and makes it her own. Maud is a spunky, likeable heroine who comes into her own . . . as the town's protector of law and order." —Anne Hillerman, NY Times Bestselling Author "A well-written thoroughly entertaining romp through the Gold Rush country with a reluctant officer of the law who discovers an aptitude for a job most thought only a man could do." —Chris Enss, NY Times Bestselling Author Other Details

Pete Seeger in His Own Words

Pete Seeger in His Own Words PDF Author: Pete Seeger
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317254279
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 385

Book Description
Long an icon of American musical and political life, Pete Seeger has written eloquently in a diverse array of publications but nowhere is his life story more personally chronicled than in these, his private writings, documents and letters stored for decades in his family barn. Pete Seeger: His Life in His Own Words, collects Seeger's letters, notes, published articles, rough drafts, stories and poetry - creating the most intimate picture yet available of Seeger as a musician, an activist and a family man. The book covers the passions, personalities and experiences of a lifetime of struggle - from the pre-WWII labour movement and the Communist Party, to Woody Guthrie, the Civil Rights movement and the struggle against the war in Vietnam. The portrait that emerges is not of a saint, but a flesh-and-blood man, struggling to understand his time and his place.
