Untitled Epic Poem on the History of Industrialization

Untitled Epic Poem on the History of Industrialization PDF Author: R. Buckminster Fuller
Publisher: Estate of R. Buckminster Fuller
ISBN: 0671204785
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
Jonathan Williams and Fuller became friends at Black Mountain College in North Carolina in the 1930s. Williams was delighted when in 1962 Fuller offered him a grant to help bring out this long poem in the Jargon Press series. Williams knew nothing about the concurrent Simon and Schuster edition until some years later when he came across a copy in a bookstore. Given Fuller’s casual approach to the publishing process this kind of funny coincidence was not unusual. Russell Davenport was an editor at Fortune magazine during the period from 1938 to 1940 when Fuller was a consultant. (Davenport was later national campaign manager for Wendell Willkie in the Republican campaign of 1940.) Almost buried on the back of the folded inside flap copy of the Jargon edition is Fuller’s statement that he and Davenport closely collaborated on the Industrialization piece: “About 10 percent of the wording was Davenport’s” and “... neither of us ever hoped it would find a publisher.” In the introduction Davenport describes Fuller as “not a poet in words” but “a poet in science,” and he had once described Fuller in Fortune as “the first poet of industrialization.” Hugh Kenner has characterized this anthem to American industry as “our only readable didactic poem.” Description by Ed Applewhite, courtesy of The Estate of Buckminster Fuller

My Head Lives Here

My Head Lives Here PDF Author: Mia Shparaga
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1728333881
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 58

Book Description
This book is a residence for thoughts that cannot live inside a head. The majority of the poems in this collection endeavor to articulate the often-overwhelming elusiveness of the world around us. Each piece intends to invoke an image that relates to moments in our life that we relive every now and then – flavoring our conscious with either hints of nostalgia or the essence of apprehension. Those moments that have been hidden away in our deepest memories, displaced by the bustling substance of “things that matter.” Throughout the text, there is an obvious evolution of emotional depth and complexity in my perception of the adequate words to say. Yet, the entire collection represents my current state as a new author, aspiring to emulate the effortless yet profound simplicity of words as art. As an extension of my own reality, the world inside these pages explores the extremes of emotion that are sometimes better read than felt.

How Beautiful the Beloved

How Beautiful the Beloved PDF Author: Gregory Orr

Category : Poetry

Pages : 106

Book Description
“[A] confident, mystical, expansive project.”—Publishers Weekly “[D]azzling and timeless . . . focus is so unwaveringly aimed toward the transcendent—not God, but the beloved—that we seem to slip into a less cluttered time.”—The Virginia Quarterly Review, “Editor’s Choice” "Mary Oliver calls him '...a Walt Whitman without an inch of Whitman's bunting or oratory.' In these pages, he is more nearly a modern-day Rumi. This is not primarily a poetry of image, but of ideas, perfectly distilled. Orr brings together the monumental themes of love and loss in small, spare, and exquisite koan-like poems."—ForeWord "...magnetic poems that open the world of lyrical verse to the larger questions of what is true and timeless." —The Bloomsbury Review Gregory Orr continues his acclaimed project on the “beloved” with a lyrical sequence about the joys and hungers of being fully engaged in life. Through concise, perfectly formed poems, he wakes us to the ecstatic possibilities of recognizing and risking love. Mary Oliver has called this project “gorgeous,” and said that he "speaks of the events that have no larger or more important rival in our lives—of our love and our loving." If to say it once And once only, then still To say: Yes. And say it complete, Say it as if the word Filled the whole moment With its absolute saying. Later for “but,” Later for “if.” Now Only the single syllable That is the beloved. That is the world. Gregory Orr is the author of ten books of poetry. He teaches at the University of Virginia and lives in Charlottesville.

Harvestman: Collected Lyrics and Poems

Harvestman: Collected Lyrics and Poems PDF Author: Steve Von Till
Publisher: Astrophil Press
ISBN: 9780998019925
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 76

Book Description
Poetry. Music. Steve Von Till's poems are lamentations--elegies for the loss of wildness, songs of hope, chants of spirit, and dreams of survival. In HARVESTMAN, Von Till meditates on what it means to be human during a time of modern alienation from nature, the past, community, and ultimately from ourselves. This is the first collection from Von Till, who is primarily known as a singer and guitarist in the highly influential and genre defying collective, Neurosis. In these tender passages, Von Till seeks meaning and mystical significance in the natural world, where he finds himself in the vastness of the ocean and the majesty of the forested mountain ranges. Shamanistic visions of ancestors and elemental forces create a unique form where gothic Americana merges with ancient mythologies in minimalistic poems that ask us to contemplate history, genetic memory, and the complexities of humanity. This worldly and weathered first work of poetry and collected lyrics is a history lesson from old punk rock bard turned rural spiritual poet, who connects us to the American West and older wisdoms.

Jim Harrison: Complete Poems

Jim Harrison: Complete Poems PDF Author: Jim Harrison
Publisher: Copper Canyon Press
ISBN: 1619322471
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 901

Book Description
Starred Review from Booklist: "This robust volume is a testament to the fortitude of a great American poet's work... [a] landmark collection." From the Introduction by Terry Tempest Williams: "Jim Harrison...was among the great ones—an elevated soul in all his unruliness who favored his senses and courted the wild on the page and in the world. His was a storied life that loomed large, and we are the beneficiaries. 'Such a powerful wounded poet—wrote as if he had to sing with a cut throat . . . and he did have to sing,' said Jorie Graham." Jim Harrison: Complete Poems is the definitive collection from one of America’s iconic writers. Introduced by activist and naturalist writer Terry Tempest Williams, this tour de force contains every poem Harrison published over his fifty-year career, as well as a section of previously unpublished "Last Poems." Here are the nature-based lyrics of his early work, the high-velocity ghazals, a harrowing prose-poem “correspondence” with a Russian suicide, the riverine suites, fearless meditations inspired by the Zen monk Crazy Cloud, and a joyous conversation in haiku-like gems with friend and fellow poet Ted Kooser. Weaving throughout these 1000 pages are Harrison’s legendary passions and appetites, his love songs and lamentations, and a clarion call to pay attention to the life you are actually living. Jim Harrison: Complete Poems confirms that Jim Harrison is a talented storyteller with a penetrating eye for details, or as Publishers Weeklycalled him, “an untrammeled renegade genius... a poet talking to you instead of around himself, while doing absolutely brilliant and outrageous things with language.” NOTE:Jim Harrison: Complete Poems also appears as a three-volume box set. Print run limited to 750 copies. Each volume is introduced by a different writer: Colum McCann, Joy Williams, and John Freeman. The box set retails for $85 and ISBN is 9781556596414.

This Promise of Change

This Promise of Change PDF Author: Jo Ann Allen Boyce

Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 321

Book Description
In 1956, one year before federal troops escorted the Little Rock 9 into Central High School, fourteen year old Jo Ann Allen was one of twelve African-American students who broke the color barrier and integrated Clinton High School in Tennessee. At first things went smoothly for the Clinton 12, but then outside agitators interfered, pitting the townspeople against one another. Uneasiness turned into anger, and even the Clinton Twelve themselves wondered if the easier thing to do would be to go back to their old school. Jo Ann--clear-eyed, practical, tolerant, and popular among both black and white students---found herself called on as the spokesperson of the group. But what about just being a regular teen? This is the heartbreaking and relatable story of her four months thrust into the national spotlight and as a trailblazer in history. Based on original research and interviews and featuring backmatter with archival materials and notes from the authors on the co-writing process.
