Abstract: The use of formative assessment can increase student achievement (Black & Wiliam, 1998a). However, some of the challenges of incorporating formative assessment into instruction include the length of time needed to collect, assess and provide feedback to all students and dealing with students’ misunderstandings and incorrect answers that are publicly shared with the entire class (Olson et al., 2010). These challenges can be overcome by incorporating the use of Wireless Networked Classroom Technology (WNCT), such as the TI-NspireTM NavigatorTM System, into instruction. This technology provides anonymity of student responses and allows for quick dissemination and retrieval of information (Olson et al., 2010). The use of WNCT has also led to improvements in student achievement in K-12 and college math and science classrooms as teachers more easily and instantaneously collect, manage, and analyze data received from students (Roschelle, Penuel, & Abrahamson, 2004).

The performance-based instrument - the TEFA Literacy Test for Secondary Mathematics - contains a number of secondary mathematics classroom scenarios, each followed by a set of questions intended to elicit evidence of participants' TEFA Literacy. Using qualitative case study methodology, the study collected and analyzed secondary mathematics preservice teachers' responses to the TEFA Literacy Test for Secondary Mathematics. The results of analysis of preservice teachers' responses showed that the participants excelled at analyzing and selecting computer-based technologies that aligned to the instructional goals. However, they were challenged by using the technology to engage students in the feedback process.

In 2010-11, Wake County Public School System (WCPSS), North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), and SMART Technologies began a two-year collaboration to promote the use of formative assessment in mathematics classrooms at three Wake County public schools: Millbrook Elementary, East Millbrook Middle, and Millbrook High school. The Formative Assessment with Technology project was unique in its design: participating mathematics teachers at an elementary, middle, and a high school received face-to-face training on formative assessment and the use of SMART Boards, additional training on formative assessment components using online North Carolina's Formative Assessment Learning Community Online Network (NC FALCON) modules, and two years of follow-up ongoing support similar to coaching on a monthly basis. The second year (2011-12) of the project was studied to determine the fidelity of implementation of the formative assessment practices and the project's impact on student achievement. Classroom observations and surveys of teachers and students showed that implementation was moderate, and it varied widely across teachers. Certain targeted practices were reported or observed much more often than others. High turnover in the teachers participating in the project likely contributed to the uneven implementation. High school staff had the highest level of implementation of training concepts as well as the highest use of the electronic response tools for assessment. An appendix includes: Attributes of Effective Formative Assessment From Council of Chief State School Officers (2008) and a copy of the Formative Assessment Classroom Observation Checklist.
