Book Description
Excerpt from The University of Virginia in the Life of the Nation And now, O Lord, as this day marks a new departure in the history of this institution, we invoke Thy special blessings upon it. May its friends far and near rally to its support as never before. May its equipment for the work required of it in the century upon which we are now entering be large and ample. Bless the great Commonwealth that fosters it; the Board of Visitors that controls it; the officers and teachers who serve it; and the students who from time to time may seek instruction within its walls. Book Description
Excerpt from How We Are Governed in Virginia and the Nation In the manner of approaching the subject the author-has been moved by the further conviction that the elementary teaching of civil government will always be a bugbear and a failure unless its chief purpose is to relate the child in an intimate and personal way to the activities of govern ment. To' the pupil of less than high school age the powers and the functions of the State auditor or the organization of, and procedure in, the civil courts of the State are very dry subjects indeed, and very naturally so. But if he lives in a city, he probably takes a lively interest in the fire department, in the police, in the many things the city undertakes to do for the health of the community - things, such as a sewerage system, which he knows about but has perhaps never thought to ascribe to the government. Or if he lives in the country, he is doubtless vitally interested in what his county is doing tor-improve roads or to con solidate schools. It has been the conscious purpose Of the author in the first six chapters Of this book to make the child above all else, see the government as a real, active thing about him, a thing Of which he is a part. It is only after the pupil's interest has been thoroughly aroused to note the many operations Of the government that the effort is made-to Show him how the government Of his State is supported, organized, and Operated. This is done in as simple language as possible. The child mind is kept constantly in v1ew, and emphasis is laid upon the actual Operation Of the machinery of government rather than upon elaborate details of its organization. Obviously it is more difficult to infuse this same personal element into the child's study of the national government. Book Description
Excerpt from The University of Virginia: Memories of Her Student-Life and Professors The conception of the work, like many undertakings, was largely accidental - growing out of the preservation by parents of the author's University letters, the recording by him of weekly doings, a form of diary, and the retention of photo graphs, magazines, newspaper articles and his side of a liberal correspondence belonging to those times. Songs of the University of Virginia (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Albert Frederick Wilson

ISBN: 9781332960842
Category : Poetry

Pages : 110

Book Description
Excerpt from Songs of the University of Virginia T does seem remarkable that out of the long decades of song and romance which have clustered themselves about this old University, there has never before come a collection of her songs. There is no other institution in this broad land where song and student life have been more closely interwoven. There is hardly an evening, whatever be the season, that the casual stroller does not hear the song of the reveler oating out across the Lawn, straying down from Carr's Hill, or at best those brave attempts at close harmony, struggling thitherward from The Corners. The Virginia Glee Club has made an enviable reputation, gathering its material from these wayward sources, but with the exception of the Glee Club there has been no organ wherein these songs of our Alma Mater might assume permanent form, both for their preservation and wider circulation. Every Alumnus should have a copy of his University Song Book in his home; it will renew the old spirit; it will refresh the old memories; it will make you a firmer and truer son of the old Alma Mater. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the University of Virginia, 1819-1919, Vol. 2: The Lengthened Shadow of One Man His journey southward over the rude, neglected roads of the country districts caused him many painful and jarring sensations. They were, at this season, at the zenith of their imperfection; and the jolts which he had to endure were recalled by him after an interval of fifty years. He described the inns as mean in their accommo dations, and the company as congenial in quality with such crude surroundings. The dirt, drinking, and tobacco spitting that degraded so many of these roadside taverns, during that period, naturally enough were revolting to the tastes of a refined and sensitive foreigner like the scholarly Long. Book Description
Excerpt from William Branch Giles: A Study in the Politics of Virginia and the Nation From 1790 to 1830 I wish also to express here my appreciation of the action of the Illinois Division of the Daughters of the Confederacy in conferring upon the writer of these pages their prize for 1914. Whether their judgment as to this particular piece of work is correct or not, certain it is that their endeavor to encourage attempts at genuine scholarship in Southern History is worthy of emulation. Book Description
Excerpt from University of Virginia, Vol. 1: Its History, Influence, Equipment and Characteristics, With Biographical Sketches and Portraits of Founders, Benefactors, Officers and Alumni Account must be taken of all the vast elements and interests which enter into the prob l'ems of modern politics on the largest scale, national and international, and which demand the exercise of the highest powers and broadest sympathies. The dealing with such interests and handling of such instruments is a great trust, the exercise of which will require a strict account before the tribunal of history. All these considerations were in the mind of the Father of the University of Virginia. The plans which he formulated and the spirit which he inculcated at the beginning were such as to require no other changes in the clays which followed after the close of his work, save those growing out of increased knowledge in special departments.
