Ending Racial Preferences
Author: Carol M. Allen
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 0739138294
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 441
Book Description
In 2006, Michigan voters banned affirmative action preferences in public contracting, education, and employment. The Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (MCRI) vote was preceded by years of campaigning, legal maneuvers, media coverage, and public debate. Ending Racial Preferences: The Michigan Story relates what happened from the vantage point of Toward A Fair Michigan (TAFM), a nonprofit organization that provided a civic forum for the discussion of preferences. The book offers a timely 'inside look' into how TAFM fostered dialogue by emphasizing education over indoctrination, reason over rhetoric, and civil debate over protest. Ending Racial Preferences opens with a review of the campaigns for and against similar initiatives in California, Florida, Washington, and the city of Houston. The book then delivers an in-depth historical account of the MCRIDfrom its inception in 2003 through the first year following its passage in 2006. Readers are invited to decide for themselves whether affirmative action preferences are good for America. Carol M. Allen reproduces the remarks delivered at a TAFM debate, along with a compilation of pro and con responses by 14 experts to 50 questions about preferences. This book will be of interest to those working in the fields of public policy and state politics.

Education and the Requirements of GCC Labor Market
Author: The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research
Publisher: Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research
ISBN:
Category : Antiques & Collectibles
Languages : en
Pages : 68
Book Description
The GCC countries today face a gap between educational output and labor market requirements. These countries enjoy substantial incomes and therefore spend generously on education, resulting in impressive levels of educational penetration among their populations within only a few decades, and have also achieved admirable levels of gender equality across the various stages of the education system. Yet returns on investment in education in the GCC countries are low. The proposed solution has been to re-create the experiences of other countries in developing their education systems and to encourage foreign universities and institutions to become established in the region—measures which have thus far proven inadequate in addressing the GCC’s educational deficiencies. To discuss the relationship between education and the labor market in the Arabian Gulf, the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) convened its 15th Annual Conference under the title Education and the Requirements of the GCC Labor Market on February 1–3, 2010 in Abu Dhabi, UAE, hosting a group of distinguished experts from various academic and professional backgrounds. This book comprises a collection of the papers presented at the conference, and as such provides a scholarly examination of the scale of the current dilemma; methods with which to monitor its indicators—such as population growth rates, the spread of education, foreign labor force concerns, and unemployment; variables of education–labor market dynamics in an international context; and case studies of the relationship between education and the labor market in selected GCC countries, including a review of the various related strategies and policies adopted by these countries—particularly those concerned with labor force nationalization and encouraging greater integration of citizens into the private sector.

Sanathana Sarathi English Volume 07 (2012 - 2021)
Author: Sri Sathya Sai Media Centre
Publisher: Sri Sathya Sai Media Centre
ISBN:
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 4302
Book Description
Started in 1958, Sanathana Sarathi is a monthly magazine devoted to Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Righteousness), Shanti (Peace) and Prema (Love) - the four cardinal principles of Bhagawan Baba's philosophy. It is published from Prasanthi Nilayam (the Abode of Highest Peace) and acts as a mouthpiece of Baba's Ashram as it speaks of the important events that take place in His sacred Abode, besides carrying Divine Messages conveyed through Divine Discourses of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The word meaning of Sanathana Sarathi is the 'Eternal Charioteer'. It signifies the presence of the Lord in every being as the atma guiding their lives like a charioteer. It implies that he who places his life, the body being likened to a chariot, in an attitude of surrender in the hands of the Lord, will be taken care of by the Lord even as a charioteer would take the occupant of his chariot safely to its destination. The magazine is an instrument to disseminate spiritual knowledge for the moral, physical and mental uplift of humanity without any discrimination as the subject matter discussed therein is always of common interest and of universal appeal. The fifteen Vahinis - streams of sacredness - known as the Vahini Series comprising annotation and interpretation of the Upanishads and other scriptures, Itihasas like the Ramayana, the Bhagavatha and the Mahabharata, and authentic explanations on Dhyana, Dharma, Prema, etc., have been serially published in this magazine as and when they emanated from the Divine pen of Bhagawan Baba. This magazine is published in almost all Indian languages, English and Telugu from Prasanthi Nilayam and others from respective regions. Every year Sanathana Sarathi comes out with a special issue in November commemorating the Divine Birthday. The English and Telugu magazines are posted on the 10th and 23rd respectively, of every month, from Prasanthi Nilayam. This magazine has wide, ever increasing circulation in India as well as abroad, as the study of it brings the reader closer to the philosophy of the Avatar in simple understandable language THUS SPAKE SAI... Discoursing during the launch of Sanathana Sarathi... From this day, our Sanathana Sarathi will lead to victory the cohorts of truth - the Vedas, the Sastras and similar scriptures of all faiths, against the forces of the ego such as injustice, falsehood, immorality and cruelty. This is the reason why it has emerged. This Sarathi will fight in order to establish world prosperity. It is bound to sound the paean of triumph when universal Ananda is achieved.
