University Autonomy Decline

University Autonomy Decline PDF Author: Kirsten Roberts Lyer
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000814211
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
This book provides empirically grounded insights into the causes, trajectories, and effects of a severe decline in university autonomy and the relationship to other dimensions of academic freedom by comparing in-depth country studies and evidence from a new global timeseries dataset. Drawing attention to ongoing discussions on standards for monitoring and assessment of academic freedom at regional and international organizations, this book identifies a need for clearer standards on academic freedom and a human rights-based definition of university autonomy. Further, the book calls for accompanying international oversight and the inclusion of criteria related to academic freedom in international university rankings. Five expert-authored case studies on academic freedom from diverse nations (Bangladesh, Mozambique, India, Poland, and Turkey) are included in the volume. Drawing on both qualitative and quantitative evidence, the book offers a unique and timely contribution to the field and will be of great interest to scholars, researchers, and students in the fields of higher education, human rights, political science and public policy. African Traditional Medicine: Autonomy and Informed Consent

African Traditional Medicine: Autonomy and Informed Consent PDF Author: Peter Ikechukwu Osuji
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319058916
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
This book focuses on informed consent in African Traditional Medicine (ATM). ATM forms a large portion of the healthcare systems in Africa. WHO statistics show that as much as 80% of the population in Africa uses traditional medicine for primary health care. With such a large constituency, it follows that ATM and its practices should receive more attention in bioethics. By comparing the ethics of care approach with the ATM approach to Relational Autonomy In Consent (RAIC), the authors argue that the ATM focus on consent based on consensus constitutes a legitimate informed consent. This book is distinctive insofar as it employs the ethics of care as a hermeneutic to interpret ATM. The analysis examines the ethics of care movement in Western bioethics to explore its relational approach to informed consent. Additionally, this is the first known study that discusses healthcare ethics committees in ATM.

Creative Autonomy, Copyright and Popular Music in Nigeria

Creative Autonomy, Copyright and Popular Music in Nigeria PDF Author: Mary W. Gani
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 303048694X
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 326

Book Description
This book provides an in-depth analysis of the unique structure of the Nigerian popular music industry. It explores the dissonance between copyright’s thematic support for creative autonomy and the practical ways in which the law allows singer-songwriters’ (performing authors') creative autonomy to be subverted in their contractual relationships with record labels. The book establishes the concept of creative autonomy for performing authors as a key criterion for sustainable economic development, and makes innovative legal and policy recommendations to help stakeholders preserve it.
