Learn Through the Universe (LTTU) explores what it means to be a human in the universe by having learners of all ages build true-to-scale two-dimensional and three-dimensional models of what exists in the universe (including themselves) at powers of ten. Being a "human in the universe" is simple in the abstract, but extremely complex in material and metaphysical realities. Just as humans readily see and make practical use of their self-reflection in mirrors, the universe can be conceived as a comparable medium for reflecting the nature of the self by means of observing outcomes from behaviors and events. By building true-to-scale physical models of what is in the universe, learners will be doing hands-on reconstructions of their universe, and in that way will be gaining a systematic feel for how their universe works. Humans are not just the dominant beings across scales, we appear to be the only ones with awareness that these scales even exist!As such we are solo actors on the stage of "the world as we know it" that we have been discovering over the last 500 years thanks to ever more powerful microscopes, telescopes and other mystery-probing instruments. But it's difficult to "get a feel" for these remote scales, given that our sense organs have evolved a range of sensitivities tuned to things and substances we can directly interact with, which does not include microscopic or cosmic realms. So we want to use LTTU to help approximate this "feel" of microscopic and cosmic interactions by providing personalized explorations of scale. This book, along with the LTTU website, provides a new system for learning, anchored by two tables of space: In to Our Atoms, and Out to Our Cosmos. The tables guide the construction of the models and offer themes for exploring what the models represent. The themes of attraction and repulsion, for example, can be used to compare nuclear, electromagnetic and gravitational forces, but also for studies in psychology and literature. The universe exists across nearly 60 powers-of-ten levels in the tables of space; it also unfolds with time. Both this book and the website offer ways to investigate how the scales of time vary from the ultrafast to the superslow in terms of process and change. They also shine new light on the 13.6 billion-year history of the Earth by providing a true-to-scale experience based on one minute of "real time" equals 100,000 years of "Earth time." The resulting 33-day long experience is illuminating in showing us that modern humans only showed up in the last six seconds: 10,000 years ago, when we began to settle and become agricultural. Excerpt from The Scale of the Universe Let us first recall that the stellar universe, as we know it, ap pears to be a very oblate spheroid or ellipsoid - a disk-shaped sys tem composed mainly Of stars and nebulae. The solar system is not far from the middle plane Of this flattened organization which we call the galactic system. Looking away from the plane we see relatively few stars; looking along the plane, through a great depth Of star-populated space, we see great numbers Of Sidereal Objects constituting the band of light we call the Milky Way. The loosely organized star clusters, such as the Pleiades, the dif fuse nebulae such as the great nebula Of Orion, the planetary nebulae, Of which the ring nebula in Lyra is a good example, the dark nebulosities - all these Sidereal types appear to be a part Of the great galactic system, and they lie almost exclusively along the plane Of the Milky Way.
