Improvement of continuous liquid/solids countercurrent device covered by British Patent 1070251 (Cloete/Streat filed in U.K. and U.S.A. only and bought by Mintek for Batemans). The British patent covered a process in which solids and liquids are contacted in countercurrent in a series of stages usually defined by a series of trays in a column. The object of Mintek patent is to ensure that all the trays remain flooded with solids. This is achieved by ensuring that the volume of solids that passes out of the last stage is less than that flowing between any pair of stages. This is achieved by a bubble cap arrangement with the caps on the last tray entrapping a larger amount of resin than those of the other trays.
