Energy Transfer and Dissipation in Plasma Turbulence
Author: Yan Yang
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9811381496
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 144
Book Description
This book revisits the long-standing puzzle of cross-scale energy transfer and dissipation in plasma turbulence and introduces new perspectives based on both magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and Vlasov models. The classical energy cascade scenario is key in explaining the heating of corona and solar wind. By employing a high-resolution hybrid (compact finite difference & WENO) scheme, the book studies the features of compressible MHD cascade in detail, for example, in order to approximate a real plasma cascade as “Kolmogorov-like” and to understand features that go beyond the usual simplified theories based on incompressible models. When approaching kinetic scales where plasma effects must be considered, it uses an elementary analysis of the Vlasov–Maxwell equations to help identify the channels through which energy transfer must be dissipated. In addition, it shows that the pressure–strain interaction is of great significance in producing internal energy. This analysis, in contrast to many other recent studies, does not make assumptions about wave-modes, instability or other specific mechanisms responsible for the dynamics – the results are direct consequences of the Vlasov–Maxwell system of equations. This is an important step toward understanding dissipation in turbulent collisionless plasma in space and astrophysics.

Model Reduction for Tokamak Plasma Turbulence
Author: Camille Gillot
Publisher:
ISBN:

Pages : 0
Book Description
Optimal control of tokamak plasmas requires efficient and accurate prediction of heat and matter transport. Growing from kinetic resonant instabilities, turbulence saturates by involving many scales, from the small vortex up to the back-reaction on the density and temperature profiles. Self-organisation processes are of particular interest, encompassing spontaneous zonal flow genera- tion and transport by avalanche. First principle numerical simulation codes like GYSELA allow studying the gyro-kinetic evolution of the particle distribution function. The large model size and cost prompts the need for reduction. Removing velocity dimensions is the so-called collisionless closure problem for fluid equations. Earlier approaches are extended and generalised by calling to the dynamical systems and optimal control litterature. In particular, we apply the balanced truncation and rational interpolation to the one-dimensional linear VlasovPoisson problem. The interpolation method features a cheap and versatile formulation, opening the door to wider use for more complex phenomena. Quasi-linear theory is the reference model for turbulent effects. The GYSELA three-dimensional output is analysed to estimate the robustness of linear properties in turbulent filaments. Key quasi-linear quantities carry over to the non-linear regime. Effective velocities and shape of turbulent structures are computed, and match expected group velocities and linear eigenmode. Nevertheless, the turbulent potential spectrum must be specified externally to quasi- linear models. This results in radially travelling unstable linear solutions that share many properties of turbulent avalanches seen in numerical simulations.

Numerical Simulation of Plasmas
Author: Y.N. Dnestrovskii
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642825923
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 317
Book Description
This book is devoted to mathematical modeling of tokamak plasma. Since the appearance in 1982 of the first edition (in Russian), a considerable amount of experimental and theoretical material on tokamak research has been accumu lated. The new-generation devices, viz. , TFTR, JET and JT-60 were put into operation. The first experiments on these units have confirmed the correctness of the basic physical concepts underlying their construction. Experiments on plasma heating with the help of neutral beams and high-frequency (HF) waves on previous generation devices made it possible to obtain high-P plasmas. The number of "medium-size" tokamaks in operation has increased. New experi mental results and advances in the theory have led to more complicated and perfected models of high-temperature plasma. Rapid progress in computer hardware and software has played an important role in the further development of mathematical modeling. While preparing the English edition of the book, we have revised the text considerably. Several new models which have undergone significant advance ment in recent years are described. A section devoted to models of RF (radio frequency) current drive has been added to Chap. 2. The reduced magneto hydrodynamic (MHD) equations for high-P plasma are now considered in detail in Chap. 3. Chapter 4 contains the latest results on anomalous thermal conductivity, diffusion coefficient and pinching. Two new sections are added to Chap. 5.
