This dissertation addresses connections among climate variability and change, land use and land cover, and population at a rural case study site in the Chitwan Valley in south-central Nepal experiencing rapid population growth and change. Subsistence farmers drawn to the area since the beginning of settlement in the 1960's are the primary residents, many of whom in-migrated to Chitwan for the increased agricultural opportunities available in the valley compared to more rural areas of Nepal. However, the dependence of the population on rainfed and seasonally irrigated agriculture leads to a vulnerability to environmental change. This study begins with an analysis of climate trends in the area, finding increasing interannual precipitation variability, increasing minimum temperatures, and reduced dry season streamflow, all likely to have adverse effects on agricultural yields in the region. Using satellite and social survey data from the Chitwan Valley Family Study, a regression model reveals links between agricultural productivity and short-distance temporary migration in the valley. Finally, to integrate findings from multilevel studies of social and environmental change in the region, an agent-based model is developed, and used to examine the effect of reciprocal connections (feedbacks) between demographic change and land use. The model reveals that feedbacks between environmental change and individual-level demographic decisions can lead to significant differences in rates of population growth and land-use change. The study reveals the strong couplings between environmental change, individual-level decisions, and livelihoods in Chitwan, and suggests that managers must take a holistic, landscape-level view when setting conservation policy.

The Kathmandu Valley, located in Nepal, is the most rapidly growing demographic region in the country. With this demographic transformation, urban land is also expanding within the valley. It is important to understand the rate and extent of urban land cover change for effective land use planning. This study analyzed the urban land cover change in the Kathmandu Valley in 1990, 2006, and 2018 using remote sensing. It also analyzed the shift in the urban topography of the valley during the same period. Landsat 5 and Landsat 8 were used to study the transformation of urban land cover in the valley. A supervised maximum likelihood classification method was utilized for the delineation of the urban areas. A slope raster file was overlaid with urban land cover to understand the changing topography of the valley. This study found that the urban land cover of the valley increased by 227% between 1990 and 2018. The valley experienced an outward expansion of urban growth which emerged from the central business districts. Similarly, the results indicate that there is a noticeable shift in urban development in the valley, with development now expanding from the flat lands to steeper sloped areas. Historical developments, economic activities, political instability in the country, the centralized government, and the valley’s status as a hub of education and technology were identified as the key drivers of urban growth.

Given the context of ongoing climate change, the livelihoods issues of a highly marginalized Chepang community form the center-point of analysis. The book demonstrates that balanced assets possession is a prerequisite to strengthen the adaptive capacity of the households. Furthermore, the ability of translating adaptive capacity into adaptation actions is determined by the households’ ability to correctly perceive the changes and their access to various assets. The book recommends to ensure the availability of non-farm livelihood opportunities along with access to formal/vocational education and skill development training as these are the key factors contributing to reduce the vulnerability. The book concludes that mainstreaming of climate change into development efforts is a must for sustainable development.
