Book Description
The New Testament epistles of Paul have been used for centuries to teach everything under the sun; from legalism to grace; freedom from sin to licentiousness; love of Christ to hatred of the Law and everything Jewish - even anti-Semitism. Indeed, wherever there is controversy in the church, you will find Romans and Galatians used to debate each position. Today however, they are generally and broadly used to promote freedom and license, and an extreme view of grace - even tolerance. The early centuries of Christianity muddied the waters in this regard and superimposed a lens on these sacred texts that is still confusing God's people today. This book presents a fresh look, with the lens removed. Get ready to have your eyes opened to the truth about law and grace and the marvelous freedom of the children of promise!

Grace in Galatia

Grace in Galatia PDF Author: Ben Witherington
Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
ISBN: 146742921X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 500

Book Description
Grace in Galatia is an innovative socio-rhetorical study of Paul's most polemical letter. Ben Witherington breaks new ground by analyzing the whole of Galatians as a deliberative discourse meant to forestall the Galatians from submitting to circumcision and the Jewish law. The commentary features the latest discussion of major problems in Pauline studies, including Paul's view of the law and the relationship between the historical data in Galatians and in Acts. Yet the narrative character of Witherington's work allows it to remain exceedingly accessible. The volume also includes sections following the major divisions of the commentary that point to the relevance of the text for believers today, making Grace in Galatia of special value to pastors and general readers as well as students and scholars.

Paul vs Peter

Paul vs Peter PDF Author: William R. Newell
Publisher: Ravenio Books
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 77

Book Description
There are two great revelators, or unfolders of Divine Truth in the Bible,—Moses in the Old Testament, and Paul in the New. Some one may say, “Is not Christ the Great Teacher?” In a sense this is true; but in a real sense Christ is the Person taught about, rather than teaching, in the Gospel. The law and the prophets pointed forward to Christ; the epistles point back to Him; and the book of Revelation points to His second coming, and those things connected with it. The Four Gospels tell the story of how He was revealed to men, and rejected by them. Christ Himself, therefore, is the theme of the Bible. Moses in the law reveals God’s holiness, and thus by means of the Law reveals human sin, and the utter hopelessness and helplessness of man. Paul in his great epistles reveal Christ as our Righteousness, Sanctification, Redemption, and All in All.

The Theology of Paul's Letter to the Galatians

The Theology of Paul's Letter to the Galatians PDF Author: James D. G. Dunn
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521359535
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
Paul's Letter to the Galatians is one of the fiercest and most polemical writings in the Bible. That is what makes it, for the author of this study, such an exciting document to deal with. It emerges from the early days of a vigorous new movement (Christianity), when basic principles were first being formulated, and when the whole character of the movement was at stake. In the pages of Galatians we witness fundamental features of Christian theology taking shape before our eyes, where the living heart of Paul's gospel is encountered. For James D. G. Dunn there is an elemental quality about the letter, to which those tired of compromising half-truths are drawn when they feel the impulse to return to first principles. This book, which benefits from this perspective on Paul, explains more clearly than hitherto both the issues which confronted Paul and the powerful theological arguments he brought to bear in response, and casts light on a document still capable of shaping lives and theology today.
