Understanding Decision-Making Processes in Airline Operations Control focuses instead on an area largely overlooked: an airline's Operations Control Centre (OCC). This serves as the nerve centre of the airline and is responsible for decision-making with respect to operational control of an airline's daily schedules. The environment within an OCC is extremely intense and a key role of controllers is to make decisions that facilitate the airline's recovery from frequent, highly complex, and often multiple disruptions. As such, decision-making in this domain is critical to minimise the operational, commercial and financial impact resulting from disruptions. The findings from this study have practical implications for OCCs. The study identified the importance of situation awareness in the decision-making process as this is likely to best prepare controllers to manage disruptions in terms of assessing situations, understanding consequences of decisions, and identifying creative solutions to problems. The study highlights the need for controllers to receive clear, comprehensive, and timely briefings. The study identified the need for a training aid that could assist controllers to identify and classify elements of situation awareness. This would improve the ways in which controllers developed a level of situation awareness in preparation for managing disruptions. A training aid could also assist controllers identify and classify decision considerations which would improve the ways in which controllers managed disruption recovery. These software applications would also assist OCCs to select future controllers as well as facilitate training of existing controllers. Despite the development of these applications, there will nevertheless always be a role for human decision-making in the OCC environment. The findings of the current study raise numerous questions as to the generalisability of results to OCCs beyond the Asia-Pacific region, other aviation domains such as pilots and air traffic controllers, and to domains such as medicine, nuclear power, and emergency services. Disruptions to schedules have severe consequences for airlines requiring improvements in decision-making processes to assist OCCs manage disruption recovery. Developments in computer-based optimisation tools can provide part of these improvements, but the current study has highlighted the importance of human involvement in the decision-making process. Therefore, further studies need to examine ways to improve human decision-making processes.
