"Across one cross-sectional and two longitudinal studies, this dissertation examined implicit attitudes and their associations with partner assimilation and dyadic behaviors in predicting relationship satisfaction. The Go/No-go Association Task (Nosek & Banaji, 2001) was tailored to examine implicit attitudes toward oneself and one's partner by collecting idiographic stimuli specific to the target individuals (e.g., first name, nickname). In Study 1, a sample of 594 individuals in romantic relationships was collected through online surveys and was followed up every three months for the next 15-months. In Study 2, a cross-sectional sample of 116 couples was collected and examined within the context of attachment theory. In Study 3, a sample of 68 newlywed couples was recruited around the time of their marriage and was followed up yearly for four years. A series of Hierarchical Linear Models (with APIM when appropriate) were run to test: 1) direct associations between implicit attitudes and relationship change over time, 2) moderation of implicit effects by partner assimilation, and 3) mediation of implicit effects by objectively coded behaviors. The results showed that positive implicit attitudes toward one's partner consistently predicted relationship satisfaction across three studies. In addition, positive and negative implicit attitudes interacted when predicting relationship functioning - suggesting possible positive and negative synergistic combinations. In contrast, implicit attitudes toward oneself only showed significant links to relationship satisfaction when measured within an attachment framework (e.g., relationally worthy vs. worthless). Partner assimilation was shown to primarily intensify links between implicit and explicit attitudes. Finally, Study 3 linked implicit attitudes to behaviors coded from problem discussions, providing tentative support for those behaviors as possible mechanisms by which implicit attitudes could shape relationship outcomes.
