Excerpt from Uncle Lisha's Shop: Life in a Corner of Yankeeland The boundaries of the township of Danvis are not more clearly defined than the limits of the county of Charlotte, in which it is situated. Suffice it to say that it is in the State of Vermont, backed at the east by the mountains that gave the State its name, and shut out from the valley of the Champlain by outlying spurs of the same range. Thus fortified against the march of improvement, its inhabitants longer retained the primitive manners, speech, and customs of the earliest settlers of Vermont than did the population of the lake towns, whose intercourse with the great centres of trade and culture was more direct and frequent. It is all changed now: Danvis has daily mails, the telegraph almost touches its border, and its mountains echo the shrieks of locomotives and the roar of railroad-trains. The people, generally, wear as fine and modern clothes as any country folk, and it is doubtful whether there is one adult who has not seen something of the bustle and life of at least one of Vermont's two cities, if not those of even greater marts. An aristocracy has sprung up, and people are losing the neighborly kindness of the old times when none were rich and none were poor, and all were in greater measure dependent on each other. In fact, the Danvis folk arc no better now than their lowland neighbors, who therefore no longer despise them.
