Este libro analiza aspectos de los movimientos indígenas en elcontinente americano desde la década de 1970 y la forma como estos movimientos han interactuado, reaccionado y participado en la creación de normas, principalmente de derecho internacional. El libro asume que los movimientos formados por los pueblos indígenas y sus aliados no indígenas han afectado la forma en que se aplica el derecho internacional a estos pueblos, a pesar de siglos de colonialismo, de actos de violencia masiva en su contra, de proyectos de desarrollo destinados a relocalizarlos o asimilarlos, de la discriminación estructural, la pobreza crónica y del acceso desigual a la educación y a los recursos. Como todo movimiento social, los defensores de los derechos indígenas han tenido desacuerdos internos y han enfrentado desafíos organizacionales. Pero en la promoción de normas específicas o en la interpretación del derecho ya existente, los pueblos indígenas han acumulado varios éxitos. De muchas maneras, este libro se centra en estos éxitos: considera, por ejemplo, el atractivo que el modelo de derechos indígenas puede tener para otros grupos, en especial para los afrodescendientes de ciertas áreas de Colombia, que persiguen el reconocimiento de la propiedad colectiva de tierras.

Finding Afro-Mexico reveals the transnational interdisciplinary histories that led to this celebrated reformulation of Mexican national identity. It traces the Mexican, African American, and Cuban writers, poets, anthropologists, artists, composers, historians, and archaeologists who integrated Mexican history, culture, and society into the African Diaspora after the Revolution of 1910. Over the past several years new constitutions have been promulgated in many Latin American countries. A notable feature of the new constitutional frameworks is the recognition of the multiethnic and pluricultural character of these Latin American societies and States. Without question this fact reflects the new weight that indigenous movements have gained in political processes in the region. The recognition of multiethnicity constitutes a significant break with the previous perspective based on homogeneity and assimilation. Although this recognition of diversity is indeed important, the real test and challenge shall be the full implementation of diversity through concrete policies and institutional reforms.
