Book Description
"As the fact checker for a popular magazine, Gabby DiMarco believes in absolute, verifiable Truths--until they throw the facts of her own life into question. The genealogy test she took as research for an article has yielded a baffling result: Gabby has a sister--one who s been desperately trying to find her. Except, as Gabby s beloved parents would confirm if they were still alive, that s impossible. Isabella Ruiz can still picture the face of her baby sister, who disappeared from the streets of San Juan twenty-five years ago. Isabella, an artist, has fought hard for the stable home and loving marriage she has today--yet the longing to find Marianna has never left. At last, she s found a match, and Gabby has agreed to come to Puerto Rico."--

ISBN: 1632994518
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
Dream Big. Become More. Told as a conversation between David and his two sons, American Familia is David’s story of growing up in rural poverty in Puerto Rico and urban poverty in the United States, detailing hopeful and transformative life-lessons along the way. This is also his family’s story: one of faith, grit, and empowerment. Part memoir and part rallying cry, this book encourages discounted youth with a vision of hope that they, too, can transcend their environment and situation—and achieve more, be more, and become more. David’s story provides guidance on how to overcome challenges in the face of great pressure and gives direction on how to develop purpose and embrace opportunities with courage and personal responsibility.

Per el afortunado

Per el afortunado PDF Author: Henrik Pontoppidan
Publisher: Ediciones de la Torre
ISBN: 8479605502
Category : Literary Collections

Pages : 706

Book Description

Gringoismos

Gringoismos PDF Author: Dave Adkins
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1483673723
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
I took two years of Latin at Grinnell (Iowa) High School and two years of French at Cornell College, but I never really committed to using these languages. However, when I spent three years in Mozambique I had an opportunity to pursue the Portuguese language in an everyday situation. When I returned to the U.S., I studied the spoken and written form of the language with a Brazilian speaking partner and developed a useful fluency. I then decided to use the basics of Portuguese in the study of Spanish. I had a number of Spanish speaking partners, did some work assignments in Tehuacan, Mexico and earned an M.A. from the University of Leon. Using some creativity, I was able to read, write and converse in Spanish as often as I wished in my places of residence in Iowa and Texas. I have written this book of bilingual essays called “Gringoismos” which is a presentation of personal experiences in the Hispanic culture as well as some take-offs on Spanish writings.

Hola and Goodbye

Hola and Goodbye PDF Author: Donna Miscolta
Publisher: Blair
ISBN: 9780932112644
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
In 1920s Southern California, Lupita Camacho leaves Mexico and settles not far from the border--and so begins the journey of an American family told by a chain of tales stretching across three generations. Early stories track Lupita's concessions to the demands of her new country and her new fish cannery job overseen by a lecherous boss who makes sure Lupita, her friend Rosa, and their Chinese coworkers work long, hard, and, for the most part, in silence, since speaking any language but English is forbidden. The family's first-generation Americans populate later stories as they work toward assimilation, complete with kidney-shaped inground pools, even though their homes and children never quite match those in the pages of Ladies Home Journal. Finally, distanced from the culture of their ancestors and freed from the stigma of accented English, Lupita's grandchildren live lives that are as wide-open as America: hosting karaoke nights, becoming female wrestlers, arriving at high school reunions utterly transformed. However, these modern-day family members discover that despite their freedom, they somehow remain set apart. In a time when the word "immigrant" has become politically charged and sometimes stripped of its earlier sense of dignity, these exquisitely human stories provide welcome restoration. In Hola and Goodbye, Donna Miscolta's altogether fascinating and flawed characters face progress and failure against the backdrop of each new generation--bound together, and to us all, by the search for a place in this world.

Book Description
This bilingual book is an enjoyable autobiography of a woman who spends her childhood among Chinese immigrants in Peru, in the city of Lima. Then, it tells us about her time in Guangzhou, China, during the late eighties and her venture in Athens, Georgia, in the US. The narration includes the difficulties, troubles, and victories of who wanted to be a faithful Christian and served the Lord wherever He leads her. The author shows the way that the Lord provided for her during different times of her life. That teaches us the great value of a life in God's sight.
