Ultraviolet Properties of Individual Hot Stars in Globular Cluster Cores. 1
Author: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

ISBN: 9781722921675
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 40
Book Description
As part of an observing program using the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite to investigate the ultraviolet properties of stars found within the cores of galactic globular clusters with blue horizontal branches (HBs), we obtained three spectra of the cluster NGC 1904 (M 79). All three were long integration-time, short-wavelength (SWP) spectra obtained at the so called 'center of light' and all three showed evidence of sources within the IUE large aperture (21.4 in. by 10 in.). In this paper we shall describe the analysis of these spectra and present evidence that the UV sources represent individual hot stars in the post-HB stage of evolution. Altner, Bruce and Matilsky, Terry A. Unspecified Center NAG5-1750...

New Quests in Stellar Astrophysics II
Author: Miguel Chavez Dagostino
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387876219
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 355
Book Description
This book presents an up-to-date collection of reviews and contributed articles in the field of ultraviolet astronomy. Its content has been mainly motivated by the recent access to the rest frame UV light of distant red galaxies, gained through large optical facilities. This driveway has derived in a renewed interest on the stars that presumably dominate or have important effects on the integrated UV properties of evolved systems of the nearby and faraway Universe. The topics included in this volume extend from the fresh spectroscopic analyses of high redshift early-type galaxies observed with the 8-10m class telescopes to the fundamental outcomes from various satellites, from the long-lived International Ultraviolet Explorer to current facilities, such as the Galaxy Evolution Explorer. This is one of the few volumes published in recent years devoted to UV astronomical research and the only one dedicated to the properties of evolved stellar populations at these wavelengths. This contemporary panorama will be an invaluable resource in the preparation of the next planned space missions, such as the World Space Observatory and the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope.

Fundamental Questions in Astrophysics: Guidelines for Future UV Observatories
Author: Ana I. Gómez de Castro
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402048394
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 171
Book Description
Modern astrophysics has evolved early phases of discovery and classification to a physics-oriented quest for answers to fundamental problems from cosmology to the origin and diversity of life-sustainable systems in the Universe. Future progress in modern astrophysics requires access to the electromagnetic spectrum in the broadest energy range. This book describes the fundamental problems in modern astrophysics that cannot progress without easy and wide-spread access to modern UV instrumentation.

Globular Clusters - Guides to Galaxies
Author: Tom Richtler
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540769617
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 448
Book Description
The principal question of whether and how globular clusters can contribute to a better understanding of galaxy formation and evolution is perhaps the main driving force behind the overall endeavour of studying globular cluster systems. Naturally, this splits up into many individual problems. The objective of the Joint ESO-FONDAP Workshop on Globular Clusters - Guides to Galaxies was to bring together researchers, both observational and theoretical, to present and discuss the most recent results. Topics covered in these proceedings are: internal dynamics of globular clusters and interaction with host galaxies (tidal tails, evolution of cluster masses), accretion of globular clusters, detailed descriptions of nearby cluster systems, ultracompact dwarfs, formations of massive clusters in mergers and elsewhere, the ACS Virgo survey, galaxy formation and globular clusters, dynamics and kinematics of globular cluster systems and dark matter-related problems. With its wide coverage of the topic, this book constitutes a valuable reference of the scientific knowledge of the field.
