Microscopic analyses of the engraved and carved mobiliary artifacts from the Upper Paleolithic mammoth-hunting cultures of the central Russian plain, encompassing the drainage of the Dnepr and Don rivers in the Upper Ukraine, conducted during 1976-77 within the institutional and museum collections in Moscow, Kiev and Leningrad ..., have revealed the presence of a number of complex symbol systems and iconographies. These were found to be different from contemporaneous symbol systems in use among the West European Upper Paleolithic cultures. ... The results of the recent research with these Ukrainian materials have provided an important new body of analytic data for comparing the diverse regional European traditions of the Upper Paleolithic and for reevaluating and reinterpreting some of the origins, meanings and uses of early Homo sapiens image, symbol and art.
