Keystone in the Arch
Author: Sherman W. Garnett
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History

Book Description
"Sherman Garnett argues that Ukraine - for reasons of size, location, diversity, historical relationships, and recent resilience - could play the role of the region's security "keystone." Tracing the country's domestic politics, steps toward economic reform, and foreign-policy decision making toward both Russia and the West, the study dispels widespread misconceptions and reveals the broad stakes in a thriving and stable Ukraine." "Garnett makes the case for a more comprehensive, post-Cold War U.S. and Western approach to both Ukraine and the region - one that looks beyond recent nuclear disarmament success and NATO expansion - and suggests the main elements of such a long-term policy."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Romantic Nationalism in Eastern Europe
Author: Serhiy Bilenky
Publisher: Stanford University Press
ISBN: 0804780560
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 409
Book Description
This book explores the political imagination of Eastern Europe in the 1830s and 1840s, when Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian intellectuals came to identify themselves as belonging to communities known as nations or nationalities. Bilenky approaches this topic from a transnational perspective, revealing the ways in which modern Russian, Polish, and Ukrainian nationalities were formed and refashioned through the challenges they presented to one another, both as neighboring communities and as minorities within a given community. Further, all three nations defined themselves as a result of their interactions with the Russian and Austrian empires. Fueled by the Romantic search for national roots, they developed a number of separate yet often overlapping and inclusive senses of national identity, thereby producing myriad versions of Russianness, Polishness, and Ukrainianness.

Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 424
Book Description
This account of historical politics in Ukraine, framed in a broader European context, shows how social, political, and cultural groups have used and misused the past from the final years of the Soviet Union to 2020. Georgiy Kasianov details practices relating to history and memory by a variety of actors, including state institutions, non-governmental organizations, political parties, historians, and local governments. He identifies the main political purposes of these practices in the construction of nation and identity, struggles for power, warfare, and international relations. Kasianov considers the Ukrainian case in the context of a global increase in the politics of history and memory, with particular emphasis on a distinctive East-European variety. He pays special attention to the use and abuse of history in relations between Ukraine, Russia, and Poland.

Regionalism without Regions
Author: Ulrich Schmid
Publisher: Central European University Press
ISBN: 9789637326639
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
This collective volume shows how Ukraine can best be understood through its regions and how the regions must be considered against the background of the nation. The overarching objective of the book is to challenge the dominance of the nation-state paradigm in the analyses of Ukraine by illustrating the interrelationship between national and regional dynamics of change. The authors—historians, sociologists, anthropologists, economists, literary critics and linguists from Ukraine, Poland, Switzerland, Germany and the USA—explicitly go beyond the perspective of an entity defined by traditional political borders and cultural, economic, historical or religious stereotypes. The research project that led to the composition of the book combined quantitative (statistical surveys conducted across Ukraine) and qualitative (in-depth interviews and focus-group discussion) methods. The authors came to the conclusion that regionalism as a defining phenomenon of Ukraine is more prominent than the regions themselves. This approach regards Ukraine as a construct in flux where different discourses intersect, concur and eventually merge through the lenses of various disciplines and methodologies.
