The Renunciations
Author: Donika Kelly
Publisher: Graywolf Press
ISBN: 9781644450536
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 72
Book Description
An extraordinary collection of endurance and transformation by the award-winning author of Bestiary The Renunciations is a book of resilience, survival, and the journey to radically shift one’s sense of self in the face of trauma. Moving between a childhood marked by love and abuse and the breaking marriage of that adult child, Donika Kelly charts memory and the body as landscapes to be traversed and tended. These poems construct life rafts and sanctuaries even in their most devastating confrontations with what a person can bear, with how families harm themselves. With the companionship of “the oracle”—an observer of memory who knows how each close call with oblivion ends—the act of remembrance becomes curative, and personal mythologies give way to a future defined less by wounds than by possibility. In this gorgeous and heartrending second collection, we find the home one builds inside oneself after reckoning with a legacy of trauma—a home whose construction starts “with a razing.”

Dante's Two Beloveds
Author: Olivia Holmes
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300125429
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 285
Book Description
Re-examining key passages in Dante’s oeuvre in the light of the crucial issue of moral choice, this book provides a new thematic framework for interpreting the Divine Comedy. Olivia Holmes shows how Dante articulated the relationship between the human and the divine as an erotic choice between two attractive women—Beatrice and the “other woman.” Investigating the traditions and archetypes that contributed to the formation of Dante’s two beloveds, Holmes shows how Dante brilliantly overlaid and combined these paradigms in his poem. In doing so he re-imagined the two women as not merely oppositional condensations of apparently conflicting cultural traditions but also complementary versions of the same. This visionary insight sheds new light on Dante’s corpus and on the essential paradox at the poem’s heart: the unabashed eroticism of Dante’s turn away from the earthly in favor of the divine.

Stuporman to the Rescue: A Short Story
Author: Rhonda Denise Johnson
Publisher: Rhondazvous Books
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 14
Book Description
Stuporman is the first short story that I wrote in the twelfth grade. At the time, I probably did not realize that this spin-off of the Man of Steel was actually a simulacrum for myself as I went through public schools with progressively severe visual and hearing disabilities. Despite living in a body that refused to do what came so easily to others, I still felt, on some level, powerful.
