Diesel Engine Transient Operation

Diesel Engine Transient Operation PDF Author: Constantine D. Rakopoulos
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1848823754
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 408

Book Description
Traditionally, the study of internal combustion engines operation has focused on the steady-state performance. However, the daily driving schedule of automotive and truck engines is inherently related to unsteady conditions. In fact, only a very small portion of a vehicle’s operating pattern is true steady-state, e. g. , when cruising on a motorway. Moreover, the most critical conditions encountered by industrial or marine engines are met during transients too. Unfortunately, the transient operation of turbocharged diesel engines has been associated with slow acceleration rate, hence poor driveability, and overshoot in particulate, gaseous and noise emissions. Despite the relatively large number of published papers, this very important subject has been treated in the past scarcely and only segmentally as regards reference books. Merely two chapters, one in the book Turbocharging the Internal Combustion Engine by N. Watson and M. S. Janota (McMillan Press, 1982) and another one written by D. E. Winterbone in the book The Thermodynamics and Gas Dynamics of Internal Combustion Engines, Vol. II edited by J. H. Horlock and D. E. Winterbone (Clarendon Press, 1986) are dedicated to transient operation. Both books, now out of print, were published a long time ago. Then, it seems reasonable to try to expand on these pioneering works, taking into account the recent technological advances and particularly the global concern about environmental pollution, which has intensified the research on transient (diesel) engine operation, typically through the Transient Cycles certification of new vehicles.

Dynamic Performance Studies of a Turbocharged Diesel Engine

Dynamic Performance Studies of a Turbocharged Diesel Engine PDF Author: Sikander S. Shamsi
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Diesel motor
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Dynamic performance of turbocharged diesel engines is of considerable importance in some applications such as marine propulsion and electric power generation. Under step-load applications turbocharged engines either recover solely or stall depending on the step size and engine speed. This paper describes the experimental and analytical studies of the dynamic behavior of a turbocharged diesel engine. Specially constructed, computer-controlled engine testbed has been described and transient test results for 100 per cent step-load application presented. A mathematical model based on the quasi-steady state assumption has been described in detail and a digital computer simulation based on this mathematical model briefly discussed. The mathematical model takes into consideration the thermal capacity affect on the exhaust gas temperature, a pulse factor based on the authors idea of mean affective turbine expansion ratio to evaluate turbocharger performance under pulsating flow conditions, extra-steady-state losses during a transient condition and re-direction of smoke. Good agreement between the predicted and the test-bed results was achieved. Illustrations describe the text-bed, dynamometer, printed circuit electromechanical governor and predicted and test-bed transient results.

Book Description
One of in a series of seminars devoted to diesel fuel injection equipment. Equipment in this field is changing rapidly to meet the requirements of legislation to control particulate emissions, nitrogen oxide emissions, unburned hydrocarbon emissions, and noise. These IMechE seminar proceedings address new diesel injection design concepts, new injection pumps and modifications to the injectors themselves which are being developed in every major manufacturing area.

Concepts in Turbocharging for Improved Efficiency and Emissions Reduction

Concepts in Turbocharging for Improved Efficiency and Emissions Reduction PDF Author: Mehrdad Zangeneh
Publisher: SAE International
ISBN: 0768081491
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 94

Book Description
Legislative requirements to reduce CO2 emissions by 2020 have resulted in significant efforts by car manufacturers to explore various methods of pollution abatement. One of the most effective ways found so far is by shortening the cylinder stroke and downsizing the engine. This new engine then needs to be boosted, or turbocharged, to create the full and original load torque. Turbocharging has been and will continue to be a key component to the new technologies that will make a positive difference in the next-generation engines of years to come. Concepts in Turbocharging for Improved Efficiency and Emissions Reduction explores the many ways that turbocharging will deliver concrete results in meeting the new realities of sustainable, green transportation. This collection of very focused technical papers, selected by Mehrdad Zangeneh, PhD., a professor of thermo-fluids at University College in London, provides an assessment of several novel designs intended to improve fuel consumption and cap emissions, while maintaining torque at all speeds. The book is divided into four sections, each addressing the most cutting-edge technologies on the market today: o Two-Stage Turbocharging o Variable Geometry Compressors o Unconventional Compressor Configurations o Electrically Assisted Turbocharging
