Book Description
An experimental two-phase flow study was conducted on a series of Lucite rectangular channels-with aspect ratios of 2 to 16 using an air-water system at atmospheric pressure. The objectives of the study were: (1) to determine the effect of sudden changes of flow area on the density of two-phase fluids; (2) to investigate the effect of mass flow rate on the two-phase friction factor multipliers and (3) to develop a sound method of measuring the density of a two-phase fluid in large conduits.

Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351406485
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 472

Book Description
This graduate text provides a unified treatment of the fundamental principles of two-phase flow and shows how to apply the principles to a variety of homogeneous mixture as well as separated liquid-liquid, gas-solid, liquid-solid, and gas-liquid flow problems, which may be steady or transient, laminar or turbulent. Each chapter contains several sample problems, which illustrate the outlined theory and provide approaches to find simplified analytic descriptions of complex two-phase flow phenomena. This well-balanced introductory text will be suitable for advanced seniors and graduate students in mechanical, chemical, biomedical, nuclear, environmental and aerospace engineering, as well as in applied mathematics and the physical sciences. It will be a valuable reference for practicing engineers and scientists. A solutions manual is available to qualified instructors.

Two-phase Flow Phenomena in Fuel Cell Microchannels

Two-phase Flow Phenomena in Fuel Cell Microchannels PDF Author: Julie Elizabeth Steinbrenner
Publisher: Stanford University
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 149

Book Description
Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells show promise as CO2-free energy-conversion devices. Predictions show that reducing the size of the gas delivery channels could improve the efficiency and power density of PEM fuel cells, however the expected benefits of reduced channel sizes have not been realized due to flooding by water generated at the cathode. Channels with small dimensions exhibit an increased propensity toward flooding as surface tension forces become significant when compared with viscous, inertial, and pressure forces. This study characterizes the distinct two-phase flow profiles that result from the interplay of these forces. We investigate fundamental water-gas interactions in silicon channels of various hydraulic diameters and cross-sectional aspect ratios using a high-contrast fluorescent imaging technique. Then, we develop a test structure to study the evolution of two-phase flow structures in a microchannel geometry designed to mimic conditions in a fuel cell channel -- a 60-cm long channel with distributed water introduction through a porous gas diffusion layer (GDL) on one wall. Finally, we present considerations for the implementation of spinning-disk confocal microscopy to provide three-dimensional (3D) visualization of two-phase flow structures which may provide insight into key flow transitions that were observed during high-speed fluorescent flow visualization. By characterizing and modeling two-phase flow in various microchannel geometries and under a large range of flow conditions, these studies provide insight that enables the improved design of microchannels for two-phase flow in fuel cells and other practical devices.

Two-Phase Gas-Liquid Flow in Pipes with Different Orientations

Two-Phase Gas-Liquid Flow in Pipes with Different Orientations PDF Author: Afshin J. Ghajar
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030416267
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 136

Book Description
This book provides design engineers using gas-liquid two-phase flow in different industrial applications the necessary fundamental understanding of the two-phase flow variables. Two-phase flow literature reports a plethora of correlations for determination of flow patterns, void fraction, two- phase pressure drop and non-boiling heat transfer correlations. However, the validity of a majority of these correlations is restricted over a narrow range of two -phase flow conditions. Consequently, it is quite a challenging task for the end user to select an appropriate correlation/model for the type of two-phase flow under consideration. Selection of a correct correlation also requires some fundamental understanding of the two-phase flow physics and the underlying principles/assumptions/limitations associated with these correlations. Thus, it is of significant interest for a design engineer to have knowledge of the flow patterns and their transitions and their influence on two-phase flow variables. To address some of these issues and facilitate selection of appropriate two-phase flow models, this volume presents a succinct review of the flow patterns, void fraction, pressure drop and non-boiling heat transfer phenomenon and recommend some of the well scrutinized modeling techniques.
