E. Salmon as chief, and for the remainder of the period it has been in charge of the writer. Doctor Salmon, after continuous service in the position of chief for more than twenty-one years, beginning with the organization of the Bureau in 1884, resigned that position early in September, 1905, and his resignation was accepted by you, to take effect November 1. The writer. Who was assistant chief at the time of Doctor Salmon's resignation, was in charge of the Bureau work as acting chief from the middle of Sep tember (when Doctor Salmon relinquished the active management in order to complete some special work before his retirement), and was appointed chief on December 1. Excerpt from Third Annual Report of the Bureau of Animal Industry for the Year 1886 Sm: I have the honor to submit herewith the Third Annual Re port of the Bureau of Animal Industry, containing an account of the work during the past year for the suppression of the disease known as contagious pleuro-pneumonia or lung plague of cattle, and also of the investigations of this and other diseases of our do mestic animals, and in regard to the present condition of the animal industry of the United States. Since writing my Annual Report for 1885, the outbreak of pleuro pneumonia which began in Harrison County, Kentucky, in 1884, and which was allowed to continue there until March of this year, has been entirely suppressed. This would not have been possible except for the act of the legislature authorizing the condemnation of the afiected animals and providing compensation for them, and the cor dial co-operation of the State Board of Health with the representa tive of this Bureau. All of the exposed animals were slaughtered and deeply buried, the stables and yards disinfected, and the locality kept under supervision until all danger of a reappearance of the disease was past. Dr. W. H. Wray deserves much credit for the professional skill and business capacity shown by him in the man agement of this outbreak, which for many reasons was unusually dificult to control. The danger Of contracting disease from such products is much greater than from meat, Since milk, cream, and butter are almost universally used and are usually consumed in the raw state. Scientific experiments by the Bureau and by other investigators have demonstrated that the germs of tuberculosis and typhoid fever are frequently conveyed through dairy products, and that these germs may remain alive and virulent in milk beyond the time within which it is usually consumed, and in butter for several months.
