Book Description
Excerpt from Twenty-Sixth Annual Report of the Municipal Government of the City of Somersworth, N. H., For the Financial Year Ending February 28, 1919 At the beginning of a new municipal year it becomes my duty once more to bring to your attention matters having to do with the government of our city. I am deeply gratified at the honor which has again been given me by the citizens of Somersworth and at this time wish to thank them for the sincere approval which a great majority appear to have expressed of my for mer administration of the affairs of this community. In the year to come a great responsibility rests upon us and I hope for this reason, if for no other, that we may be able to transact such business as may come before us without discord, for under present conditions we have a difficult proposition ahead, and harmony is the first requisite if we hope to meet with any measure of success. Book Description
Excerpt from Twenty-First Annual Report of the Municipal Government of the City of Somersworth, N. H: For the Financial Year Ending February 28, 1914 During my administration the state road has been extended on High street, from Pearl street to Washington street, and the same treated with oil. The macadam on High street, from Washington street to Fore street, has been relaid and macadam has also been put in on Washington street, from Orange to Main street; also on West High street. State road has been built from Washington street to the Rochester line, a stretch of about two and three - quarters miles. The idea of having one man retained by the street department to take care of the waste which accrues in the streets from day to day has been tried out during the past year and has proved a success. The chlorine treatment for purification of water has been installed at the filter bed. This system does the work desired in so far as needed in the eradication of germs, bacteria, and things of a like nature, which may be found in the water of Salmon Falls river. A compressed air fire gong apparatus has been placed in working order, which I feel will be a great improvement on conditions as they have existed for the last few years. Many minor changes for the better have been made, and I believe that the administration, just passed, can truly be classed as progressive. I have been as economical as possible under the conditions prevailing to-day, but with prices high, it is a practical impossibility to accomplish anything without the expenditure of much money. Book Description
Excerpt from Twenty-Third Annual Report of the Municipal Government of the City of Somersworth, N. H: For the Financial Year Ending February 28, 1916 Once more it becomes my pleasant duty to preside over the inauguration exercises of a new city govern ment. My heart is filled with gratitude that I should be again honored by our citizens. The office of Mayor is an honorable one, and I assure the people of Somers Worth that I shall do my utmost to guard and protect the interests of our city as carefully in the year to come as has been done heretofore. The responsibilities that are to be intrusted to us during the coming year are no greater than those which have come under the care and guidance of prior city governments, but whatever they may be, we shall be required to exercise our best judgment and ability, hav ing in mind' at all times the good welfare of the entire community. In the years preceding in Which I have served the City of Somersworth as Mayor, my relations with the City Council have almost invariably been harmonious, discord has been an unknown quantity, and it is my experience that harmony is the one thing necessary, more than any other, for our city to obtain good results from our incumbency in office.
