Book Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Book Description
Excerpt from Twenty Five Discourses Suitable to the Lord's Supper: Delivered Before the Observance of That Ordinance It cannot be too deeply impressed upon the mind of every professing Christian that in religion no exercise is required or accepted by God excepting what is rendered as a "reasonable service." Where the judgment is not enlightened, nor the affections interested, the exercise, however solemnly, decently, and scrupulously conducted, becomes nothing more than a mere empty form, and, as such, utterly worthless in the sight of Him who "is a Spirit and seeketh that they who worship him should worship him in spirit and in truth." Hence the vast importance of having the mind possessed with clear and scriptural views of the nature, design and obligations of those ordinances which Christ has appointed to be observed in his church. John Owen on the Lord's Supper

John Owen on the Lord's Supper PDF Author: Jon D. Payne

Book Description
The approach of the Puritans to the Lord's Supper is a comparatively neglected aspect of their heritage. In particular, John Owen's twenty-five sacramental discourses are little known and little read, even among those who value his massive contribution to the understanding and defense of the doctrines of the gospel. In John Owen on the Lord's Supper, Jon D. Payne has set out to rescue Owen's teaching on the Supper from this neglect. He sets the scene by outlining Owen's life and teaching. He then goes on to examine the development of Reformed teaching on the Supper- especially the part played by Calvin and Peter Martyr Vermigli- before focusing on Owen's Twenty-five Discourses Suitable to the Lord's Supper, delivered between 1669 and 1682, and taken down by hearers. But the latter part of this volume is occupied by the Discourses themselves. Here the reader will encounter an Owen less concerned to define and defend truth than to comfort and help even the weakest of believers as they come to the Lord's Supper. The great and lasting value of this work comes from Owen's obvious desire to promote 'delight in Christ, thankfulness unto him and the keeping of his word', in all who partake.
