Four men entered last year for the purpose of learning to make brooms: one of them was over fifty years of age, but having a family, and being desirous still to contribute to their support, he applied himself to the trade, and in less than three months mastered it, and went forth, with cheerful spirit, to commence life anew. Two of the others had fami lies and are now sustaining themselves respectably by this trade. The braiding of Palm-leaf hats, referred to in our last Report, is still taught some of our young ladies had Opportunity to test the value of this art during the last vacation, and the results thus far warrant the continuance of the experiment. By a vote of the Trustees, a few who had completed their regular term in the Institution were allowed to return for the purpose of learning this employment. Book Description
Excerpt from Fifty-Fifth Annual Report of the Board of Trustees and Officers of the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind, to the Governor of the State of Ohio: For the Fiscal Year Ending November 15, 1891 Sections 4065 and 4074, and probably some others of our Revised Statutes, might be readily amended so as to apply to our State institutions as well as to our common schools. We called attention also, in our last year's report, to the deficiency of our gas supply, and now find it necessary to say the defect has not been remedied, for want of the necessary funds. Something will have to be done in this matter. Either our gas supply will have to be increased or some other system of light introduced. It is altogether probable that the introduction of electric light into our offices and the more commonly used of our rooms, might be the most economical method of overcoming the difficulty. The matter of a gymnasium for our pupils has been recommended so often heretofore that we feel to renew the request here would be but a use less waste of time and space; yet, it gymnasiums are of benefit to any, how much more so to those deprived of the ordinary means of exercise by reason of blindness? Some improvement in our ventilating system would undoubtedly be a prudent guard against the possibility of epidemic among our pupils, as their present supply of air comes directly through the basement. Our heating system, also, is very defective, and ought to be improved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
