North American three-toed box turtles are found in a few states west of the Mississippi River including quite a bit of Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. The head and neck is frequently pigmented with spaces of yellow, orange, high contrast on tanish skin. Scales on the forelegs are generally yellow or orange. They are called three-toed box turtles since they ordinarily have just three toes on their rear appendages.
