The Troubled Alliance

The Troubled Alliance PDF Author: Gerard E. Silberstein
Publisher: University Press of Kentucky
ISBN: 0813186617
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 545

Book Description
On August 1, 1914, the German and Austro-Hungarian empires stood on the brink of the greatest war history had known. Their great need was for alliances that would provide manpower and defense of their borders. In only one direction could these be sought—the Balkan Peninsula. Yet disagreements between foreign officers and high commands increased the difficulty of establishing such alliances. Austrian caution continually clashed with German persistence, for the expansionist drives of the Balkan powers threatened the monarchy's own ambitions. The differences between the two allies were smoothed over in the case of Turkey and Bulgaria, but the ultimate diplomatic failure in Rumania produced much rancor. The author's examination of little known documents in the German and Austrian archives brings to light details of an often tortured relationship. The personalities of those who shaped the course of the war and the playing off of power against power are here clearly revealed.

Collected Poems

Collected Poems PDF Author: Robert Bly
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company
ISBN: 0393652459
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 628

Book Description
Gathering more than sixty years of poetry, Collected Poems showcases the brilliant career of a "great American transcendentalist" (New York Times). An extraordinary culmination for Robert Bly’s lifelong intellectual adventure, Collected Poems presents the full magnitude of his body of work for the first time. Bly has long been the voice of transcendentalism and meditative mysticism for his generation; every stage of his work is warmed by his devotion to the art of poetry and his affection for the varied worlds that inspire him. Influenced by Emerson and Thoreau alongside spiritual traditions from Sufism to Gnosticism, he is a poet moved by mysteries, speaking the language of images. Collected Poems gathers the fourteen volumes of his impressive oeuvre into one place, including his imagistic debut, Silence in the Snowy Fields (1962); the clear-eyed truth-telling of his National Book Award–winning collection, The Light Around the Body (1967); the masterful prose poems of The Morning Glory (1975); and the fiercely introspective, uniquely American ghazals of his latest collection, Talking into the Ear of a Donkey (2011). A monumental poetic achievement, Collected Poems makes clear why poets and lovers of poetry have long looked to Robert Bly for emotional authenticity, moral authority, and artistic inspiration.

Zeki Kuneralp and the Turkish Foreign Service

Zeki Kuneralp and the Turkish Foreign Service PDF Author: Yücel Güçlü
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443879754
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 599

Book Description
This book is not a conventional biography. It is not only a portrait of a larger-than-life Turkish diplomat, whose Foreign Service career spanned almost four decades – from 1941 to 1979 – but also offers a glimpse into the evolution of the organization of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and provides an account of the attitudes and methods of the Ministry’s officials. A good biography should cast light upon its subject’s times as well as his – or her – life; upon the way things were done, as much as upon the way a particular individual reacted and behaved. As such, in this book, not only is Zeki Kuneralp the man addressed but also the great developments of his time are explored extensively. The book blends biographical narrative with explorations of various aspects of the foreign policy issues with which Kuneralp was involved. The book treats in detail the major problems with which Kuneralp was directly concerned at each of his postings: that is, meeting the right people abroad, promoting Turkish interests, reporting to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, subordinating local matters to the political and economic goals of Turkey, and conducting diplomacy so as always to be in accord with Ankara’s policy makers, whose big picture he always kept in mind.
