Truth-conditional Pragmatics

Truth-conditional Pragmatics PDF Author: François Recanati
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780191710223
Category : Pragmatics
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
Recanati argues against the traditional understanding of the semantics/pragmatics divide. Through half a dozen case studies, he shows that 'pragmatic modulation' interacts with the grammar-driven process of semantic composition. As a result, what an utterance says cannot be neatly separated from what the speaker means.

Subjectivity and Perspective in Truth-theoretic Semantics

Subjectivity and Perspective in Truth-theoretic Semantics PDF Author: Peter Lasersohn
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199573670
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 293

Book Description
This book explores linguistic and philosophical issues presented by sentences expressing personal taste, such as Roller coasters are fun, and examines how truth-theoretic semantics can account for expressions of this type. It provides a detailed and explicit formal grammar paired with semantic analysis and pragmatic theory.

The Cambridge Handbook of Pragmatics

The Cambridge Handbook of Pragmatics PDF Author: Keith Allan
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139501895
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 967

Book Description
Pragmatics is the study of human communication: the choices speakers make to express their intended meaning and the kinds of inferences that hearers draw from an utterance in the context of its use. This Handbook surveys pragmatics from different perspectives, presenting the main theories in pragmatic research, incorporating seminal research as well as cutting-edge solutions. It addresses questions of rational and empirical research methods, what counts as an adequate and successful pragmatic theory, and how to go about answering problems raised in pragmatic theory. In the fast-developing field of pragmatics, this Handbook fills the gap in the market for a one-stop resource to the wide scope of today's research and the intricacy of the many theoretical debates. It is an authoritative guide for graduate students and researchers with its focus on the areas and theories that will mark progress in pragmatic research in the future.

Quotation and Truth-Conditional Pragmatics

Quotation and Truth-Conditional Pragmatics PDF Author: Xiaofei Wang
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351611178
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 316

Book Description
In the past decades, quotation theories have developed roughly along three lines—quotation types, meaning effects, and theoretical orientations toward the semantics/pragmatics distinction. Currently, whether the quoted expression is truth-conditionally relevant to the quotational sentence, and if there is a truth-conditional impact, whether it is generated via semantic or pragmatic processes, have become the central concerns of quotation studies. In this book, quotation is clearly defined for the first time as a constituent embedded within yet distinctive from the quotational sentence. Also, as the first monograph to address the semantics/pragmatics boundary dispute over quotation, it argues that the semantic content of quotation amounts to its contribution to the intuitive truth-conditional content of the quotational utterance via two modes of presentation, which are incarnated in the functioning of quotation marks and manifested as use and mention. The use/mention-based analysis in this book can shed light on the semantic theorizing of other metalinguistic phenomena, while the semantics/pragmatics perspective will provide methodological implications for other relevant studies. The new conception of quotation and thought-provoking analysis on use/mention, truth-conditional pragmatics, and the semantics/pragmatics boundary in this book will appeal to scholars and students in philosophy of language and linguistics. It will also serve as a clear guide to the current state of quotation studies and how to formulate a semantic theory of quotation.

Philosophical Perspectives for Pragmatics

Philosophical Perspectives for Pragmatics PDF Author: Marina Sbisà
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027207879
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
The ten volumes of "Handbook of Pragmatics Highlights" focus on the most salient topics in the field of pragmatics, thus dividing its wide interdisciplinary spectrum in a transparent and manageable way. While the other volumes select specific cognitive, grammatical, social, cultural, variational, interactional, or discursive angles, this 10th volume focuses on the interface between pragmatics and philosophy and reviews the philosophical background from which pragmatics has taken inspiration and with which it is constantly confronted. It provides the reader with information about authors relevant to the development of pragmatics, trends or areas in philosophy that are relevant for the definition of the main concepts in pragmatics or the characterization of its cultural context, the neighbouring field of semantics (with particular respect to truth-conditional semantics and some main branches of formal semantics), and recent philosophical debates that involve pragmatic notions such as indexicality and context. While most of the references are to the analytic philosophical field, also perspectives in so-called continental philosophy are taken into account. The introductory chapter outlines some unifying routes of reflection as regards meaning, speech as action, and self and mind, and suggests some connections between doing pragmatics and doing philosophy.

Semantics Versus Pragmatics

Semantics Versus Pragmatics PDF Author: Zoltan Gendler Szabo
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199251517
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 476

Book Description
This is a collection of papers by leading scholars in the philosophy of language and theoretical linguistics on how semantics and pragmatics embed into a larger theory of interpretation and also on the disputed territories between these disciplines.

Use-conditional Meaning

Use-conditional Meaning PDF Author: Daniel Gutzmann
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198723822
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 323

Book Description
This book seeks to bring together the pragmatic theory of 'meaning as use' with the traditional semantic approach that considers meaning in terms of truth conditions. Daniel Gutzmann's new approach captures the entire meaning of complex expressions and overcomes the empirical gaps and conceptual problems associated with previous analyses.

Critical Pragmatics

Critical Pragmatics PDF Author: Kepa Korta
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139498509
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 193

Book Description
Critical Pragmatics develops three ideas: language is a way of doing things with words; meanings of phrases and contents of utterances derive ultimately from human intentions; and language combines with other factors to allow humans to achieve communicative goals. In this book, Kepa Korta and John Perry explain why critical pragmatics provides a coherent picture of how parts of language study fit together within the broader picture of human thought and action. They focus on issues about singular reference, that is, talk about particular things, places or people, which have played a central role in the philosophy of language for more than a century. They argue that attention to the 'reflexive' or 'utterance-bound' contents of utterances sheds new light on these old problems. Their important study proposes a new approach to pragmatics and should be of wide interest to philosophers of language and linguists.
