A Treatise on Heavenly Mindedness

A Treatise on Heavenly Mindedness PDF Author: Thomas Jollie
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781626631175
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 90

Book Description
Thomas Jollie (1629-1703) was a zealous puritan preacher with superior abilities, an active spirit, and humble disposition. He was held in high esteem and influence in the churches of Christ, which he directed to the general good and the glory of God.Few of Jollie's works survive today. This puritan gem on heavenly mindedness is exceedingly rich with Scripture, and dripping with praise to Jesus Christ. Jollie covers in this work the primary doctrine that, "the saints' holy calling out of the world, and their afflicted condition in it is, that they are heavenly both in profession and practice." His text is Hebrews 11:16, "...they desire a better country." He shows that it is the good pleasure of God to appoint this course for his saints though their lives might be filled with suffering and affliction.Jollie teaches that Christians should learn this duty: that we freely subscribe and faithfully hold steadfast to God, no matter what our condition may be, and that we ought to drink down this bitter cup, knowing God will supply the needed grace. There is no Christian that has ever lived that has been removed from suffering or affliction in their life. Such a view supposes that manifold dangers and necessities, temptations and tribulations, attend the people of God in this world. But with the Lord is plenteous redemption. Knowing this, we should keep in mind that it is the good pleasure of God to work all good to his people in such a way and manner as may be, "to the praise of the glory of his grace."

Eternal Truth

Eternal Truth PDF Author: Rear Admiral Joseph H. Miller
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1512712868
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 268

Book Description
We must discover the real world. All generations are struggling for truth! Truth is our heritage and gift to the next generation, so we must support education for all people. Some generations have essentially halted progress, and others are making progress only because of a few. In our world, we must proclaim religious and free speech. The concept of human liberty is more than 4,000 years old and is repeated by Christ Himself. We must dare to read, think, speak, and write the truth. Truth is not only violated by falsehood, but also by silence. Ignorance produces the work of monsters. Ignorance is not bliss; it is oblivion. Ignorance is sin, not innocence. Man is what he believes, coated by either truth or ignorance. Truth demands a basic standard of living for the masses to ensure security and freedom for their development. Man is master of his fate, but he must seek the truth. Truth is on the march, and nothing can stop it!

The Eastern Path to Heaven

The Eastern Path to Heaven PDF Author: Michael Roach
Publisher: Church Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 1596270977
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 159

Book Description
Geshe Michael Roach and Christie McNally have explored together the ancient cities, rare manuscripts, and oral traditions of India and Tibet which bear witness to teachings of Thomas - the disciple that Jesus sent to the east. The Eastern Path to Heaven presents the great ideas that came to those lands through Thomas, and describes how we can use authentic Christian teachings of ancient Asia to achieve six goals of life: physical health; financial security; love; happiness; freedom from aging and death; and fulfilment in the service of others. Brief, accessible, chapters each open with a quotation by Jesus from the New Testament that speaks to achieving the six goals according to the wisdom of the Eastern side of the Christian family. Brief historical summaries show how the teachings of Jesus entered India with Thomas, traveling along the routes pioneered by Alexander the Great, and then reached Tibet. These sketches utilize information from Syrian, Coptic, Greek, Tibetan, and Sanskrit manuscripts, often translated by the authors for the first time.

Yeshua the Cosmic Mystic

Yeshua the Cosmic Mystic PDF Author: Theodore Nottingham
Publisher: Theosis Books
ISBN: 0983769737
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 127

Book Description
The experiential and transformational teachings brought to each human being by Jesus of Nazareth transcending religious beliefs, creeds, cultures, and time. The essence of the teachings of Jesus called the Anointed One is the awakening of the spiritual depths of human beings in a way that utterly transforms their understanding of themselves and of their relationship with life. Our world desperately needs such a unifying vision and a sense of common ground among people and cultures. It is the mystic first and foremost who reveals the spiritual home that we all share and the wondrous purpose of our presence in the universe. One of the highly respected personalities in the religious world of our time, the Benedictine Monk Bede Griffith, made this radical and prophetic statement late in his life: "If Christianity cannot recover its mystical tradition and teach it, it should just fold up and go out of business." The Anointed One put it another way: "Why do you call Me, Lord, Lord and do not practice what I tell you?" (Luke 6:46)

Visions Of Heaven And Hell

Visions Of Heaven And Hell PDF Author: John Bunyan
Publisher: Darolt Books
ISBN: 8835363624
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 56

Book Description
Visions Of Heaven And Hell is a message of meditation based on the Bible and written by John Bunyan (November 30, 1628 – August 31, 1688) was an English writer and Puritan preacher best remembered as the author of the Christian allegory The Pilgrim's Progress. In addition to The Pilgrim's Progress, Bunyan wrote nearly sixty titles, many of them expanded sermons. Bunyan came from the village of Elstow, near Bedford. He had some schooling and at the age of sixteen joined the Parliamentary Army during the first stage of the English Civil War. After three years in the army he returned to Elstow and took up the trade of tinker, which he had learned from his father. He became interested in religion after his marriage, attending first the parish church and then joining the Bedford Meeting, a nonconformist group in Bedford, and becoming a preacher. After the restoration of the monarch, when the freedom of nonconformists was curtailed, Bunyan was arrested and spent the next twelve years in jail as he refused to give up preaching. During this time he wrote a spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and began work on his most famous book, The Pilgrim's Progress, which was not published until some years after his release. Bunyan's later years, in spite of another shorter term of imprisonment, were spent in relative comfort as a popular author and preacher, and pastor of the Bedford Meeting. He died aged 59 after falling ill on a journey to London and is buried in Bunhill Fields. The Pilgrim's Progress became one of the most published books in the English language; 1,300 editions having been printed by 1938, 250 years after the author's death. He is remembered in the Church of England with a Lesser Festival on 30 August, and on the liturgical calendar of the United States Episcopal Church on 29 August. Some other churches of the Anglican Communion, such as the Anglican Church of Australia, honour him on the day of his death (31 August).
