Holographic Microscopy of Phase Microscopic Objects

Holographic Microscopy of Phase Microscopic Objects PDF Author: Tatyana Tishko
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 981428954X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 109

Book Description
This book presents a clear and comprehensive review of the current status of three-dimensional (3D) digital holographic imaging of phase microscopic objects, with insightful discussions on the positive and negative features of classical, electronic and holographic microscopy. The technical details and results of the restoration of the 3D shapes of red blood cells, bacteria, yeasts, thin films and other micro-objects are presented. The physical background of the method was substantiated by the authors in 1989 and in 1998, the very first digital holographic interference microscope was developed. Clear evidence of the pathological flattened shape of the erythrocytes relevant to different pathologies is given by detailed measurements on the 3D images. Based on the model of the erythrocyte as a liquid-filled, charged, and viscoelastic shell reinforced by skeleton, numerical computations of the equilibrium shapes of human erythrocytes are made, and the results are analyzed and compared to the 3D visualization data.

Haptics for Teleoperated Surgical Robotic Systems

Haptics for Teleoperated Surgical Robotic Systems PDF Author: M. Tavakoli
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812813152
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 179

Book Description
An important obstacle in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is the significant degradation of haptic feedback (sensation of touch) to the surgeon about surgical instrument's interaction with tissue. This monograph is concerned with devices and methods required for incorporating haptic feedback in master-slave robotic MIS systems. In terms of devices, novel mechanisms are designed including a surgical end-effector (slave) with full force sensing capabilities and a surgeon-robot interface (master) with full force feedback capabilities. Using the master-slave systems, various haptic teleoperation control schemes are compared in terms of stability and performance, and passivity-based time delay compensation for haptic teleoperation over a long distance is investigated. The monograph also compares haptic feedback with visual feedback and with substitution for haptic feedback by other sensory cues in terms of surgical task performance.

Cardiac Fibrillation-defibrillation: Clinical And Engineering Aspects

Cardiac Fibrillation-defibrillation: Clinical And Engineering Aspects PDF Author: Max E Valentinuzzi
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814465798
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
This compendium gives a comprehensive overview of the advances in fibrillation-defibrillation knowledge — recognition of fibrillation as a unique life threatening cardiac arrhythmia; discovery of the electric discharge in its double role of culprit and savior; and technological improved contributions. The book stands on the well-known philosophy of Education-Based on Problems (or EBP), that is, take fibrillation as a medical daily problem and search for that knowledge, technique or principle trying to solve it.The book is interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary. It addresses undergraduate and graduate biomedical engineering students, physicians going into cardiology, clinical engineers and clinical engineering technicians, nurses, paramedics and emergency medical personnel.

Biomechanics

Biomechanics PDF Author: Y.C. Fung
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1441968563
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 583

Book Description
Biomechanics aims to explain the mechanics oflife and living. From molecules to organisms, everything must obey the laws of mechanics. Clarification of mechanics clarifies many things. Biomechanics helps us to appreciate life. It sensitizes us to observe nature. It is a tool for design and invention of devices to improve the quality of life. It is a useful tool, a simple tool, a valuable tool, an unavoidable tool. It is a necessary part of biology and engineering. The method of biomechanics is the method of engineering, which consists of observation, experimentation, theorization, validation, and application. To understand any object, we must know its geometry and materials of construc tion, the mechanical properties of the materials involved, the governing natural laws, the mathematical formulation of specific problems and their solutions, and the results of validation. Once understood, one goes on to develop applications. In my plan to present an outline of biomechanics, I followed the engineering approach and used three volumes. In the first volume, Biomechanics: Mechanical Properties of Living Tissues, the geometrical struc ture and the rheological properties of various materials, tissues, and organs are presented. In the second volume, Biodynamics: Circulation, the physiology of blood circulation is analyzed by the engineering method.

A Manual For Biomaterials/scaffold Fabrication Technology

A Manual For Biomaterials/scaffold Fabrication Technology PDF Author: Gilson Khang
Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company
ISBN: 9813101601
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
Tissue engineering has been recognized as offering an alternative technique to whole-organ and tissue transplantation for diseased, failed, or malfunctioned organs. To reconstruct a new tissue via tissue engineering, the following triad components are needed: (1) cells which are harvested and dissociated from the donor tissue; (2) biomaterials as scaffold substrates in which cells are attached and cultured, resulting in implantation at the desired site of the functioning tissue; and (3) growth factors which promote and/or prevent cell adhesion, proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Of these three key components, scaffolds play a critical role in tissue engineering. This timely book focuses on the preparation and characterization of scaffold biomaterials for the application of tissue-engineered scaffolds. More importantly, it serves as an experimental guidebook on the standardization of the fabrication process and characterization of scaffolding technology.

Models of Oculomotor Control

Models of Oculomotor Control PDF Author: George K. Hung
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9810245688
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 141

Book Description
This monograph is a structured review of models of oculomotor control systems that is geared toward biomedical engineers, vision scientists, and optometry students. It aims to provide the biomedical engineer with a thorough understanding of how various engineering control principles are applied to oculomotor systems, and the non-engineer with knowledge of how various physiological and clinical concepts can be represented quantitatively and efficiently by control system models.Basic control system concepts and oculomotor physiology are first introduced, along with a glossary, to provide background for the more advanced topics. Then, these concepts are applied to static linear and nonlinear analysis of various oculomotor systems. In addition, advanced topics are presented on the application of dynamic linear and nonlinear modeling techniques to the oculomotor system, with a particular emphasis on myopia development. This book can thus serve as a unique reference for quantitative analysis of oculomotor control, and as a foundation for future research on the oculomotor system.
