Publisher: Rockport Publishers
ISBN: 0760375178
Category : Design
Languages : en
Pages : 426

Book Description
Universal Principles of Design, Completely Updated and Expanded Third Edition is a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary encyclopedia, now with fully updated references for existing entries and expanded with 75 new entries to present a total of 200 laws, guidelines, and considerations that are important to successful design. Richly illustrated and easy to navigate, this essential design guide pairs clear explanations of every design concept with visual examples of the ideas applied in practice. Whether a marketing campaign or a museum exhibit, a video game or a complex control system, the design we see is the culmination of many concepts and practices brought together from a variety of disciplines. Because no one can be an expert on everything, designers have always had to scramble to find the information and know-how required to make a design work—until now. Each principle is presented in a two-page format. The first page contains a succinct definition and a full description of the principle, examples of and guidelines for its use, and side notes that provide elaborations and references. The second page contains visual examples and related graphics to support a deeper understanding of the principle. The book is organized alphabetically so that principles can be easily and quickly referenced by name. From 3D Projection to the Zeigarnick Effect, every major design concept is defined and illustrated, including these new additions: Feature creep Gamification Root cause Social trap Supernormal stimulus A landmark reference for designers, engineers, architects, and students, Universal Principles of Design has become the standard for anyone seeking to broaden and improve their design expertise, explore brainstorming ideas, and improve the quality of their design work. The titles in the Rockport Universal series offer comprehensive and authoritative information and edifying and inspiring visual examples on multidisciplinary subjects for designers, architects, engineers, students, and anyone who is interested in expanding and enriching their design knowledge.

Alfonso's Rectifying the Curved

Alfonso's Rectifying the Curved PDF Author: Ruth Glasner
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3319773038
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 293

Book Description
This volume offers a new English translation, introduction, and detailed commentary on Sefer Meyasher 'Aqov, (The Rectifying of the Curved), a 14th-century Hebrew treatise on the foundation of geometry. The book is a mixture of two genres: philosophical discussion and formal, Euclidean-type geometrical writing. A central issue is the use of motion and superposition in geometry, which is analyzed in depth through dialog with earlier Arab mathematicians. The author, Alfonso, was identified by Gita Gluskina (the editor of the 1983 Russian edition) as Alfonso of Valladolid, the converted Jew Abner of Burgos. Alfonso lived in Castile, rather far from the leading cultural centers of his time, but nonetheless at the crossroad of three cultures. He was raised in the Jewish tradition and like many Sephardic Jewish intellectuals was versed in Greek-Arabic philosophy and science. He also had connections with some Christian nobles and towards the end of his life converted to Christianity. Driven by his ambition to solve the problem of the quadrature of the circle, as well as other open geometrical problems, Alfonso acquired surprisingly wide knowledge and became familiar with several episodes in Greek and Arabic geometry that historians usually consider not to have been known in the West in the fourteenth century. Sefer Meyasher 'Aqov reflects his wide and deep erudition in mathematics and philosophy, and provides new evidence on cultural transmission around the Mediterranean.

A History of Psychology in Western Civilization

A History of Psychology in Western Civilization PDF Author: Bruce K. Alexander
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139991833
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 563

Book Description
This book is a re-introduction to psychology. It focuses on great scholarly thinkers, beginning with Plato, Marcus Aurelius and St Augustine, who gave the field its foundational ideas long before better known 'founders', such as Galton, Fechner, Wundt and Watson, appeared on the scene. Psychology can only achieve its full breadth and potential when we fully appreciate its scholarly legacy. Bruce Alexander and Curtis Shelton also argue that the fundamental contradictions built into psychology's history have never been resolved, and that a truly pragmatic approach, as defined by William James, can produce a 'layered' psychology that will enable psychologists to face the fearsome challenges of the twenty-first century. A History of Psychology in Western Civilization claims that contemporary psychology has overemphasized the methods of physical science and that psychology will need a broader scientific orientation alongside a scholarly focus in order to fully engage the future.
