Excerpt from Health Education in Rural Schools The winning of the war has long commanded the attention of the American people. Our resources have been spent lavishly to make secure our liberties and the freedom of the world. Such a supreme crisis in our history revealed inspiring patriotism, but also a pathetic weakness in our citizens. Out of 2,510,706 men who were examined on the first draft, a vast army of 730,756 men were rejected on physical grounds. A large proportion of these physical defects might have been corrected or prevented if the schools had been doing their part to train children to conserve and improve their health. Such a serious flaw in public education must challenge the efforts of educators throughout the land. Several States, realizing the gravity of the situation, have recently passed laws making physical education obligatory and requiring a more extensive and practical teaching of hygiene. Reducing urban-rural gaps in child health and nutrition is one of the most difficult challenges faced by many countries. This paper evaluates the impact of the Nutrition Improvement Program (NIP), a large-scale school meal program in rural China, on the health and nutritional status of compulsory education students aged 6-16. We use data from multiple rounds of the China Health and Nutrition Survey between 2004-2015 and implement a quasi-experimental approach exploiting cross-county variations in program implementation. We find that NIP participation is, on average, associated with a higher height-for-age z-score in the order of 0.22-0.42 standard deviations. The impacts are larger among students in a better health condition but small or not significant among the most disadvantaged. We do not observe heterogeneous effects across several individual and household characteristics. We also do not find significant effects on Body Mass Index-for-age and weight-for-age z scores. The results suggest that NIP partially improved students’ health over the first years of implementation, but more support is needed to achieve broader impacts that effectively reach all vulnerable students. Several robustness checks support our findings.

Rural Education: Teaching Strategies, Student Issues and Trends begins by presenting a community based participatory research program implemented after a need assessment program identified life skills as the number one health priority in the Banestan village. 195 individuals over 15 years of age from 60 families were enrolled in the program and participated in the training workshops for one month twice a week. Following this, the authors aim to demonstrate that participatory design process can be combined to participatory popular education dynamics, in order to build a methodology to construct serious games and software applications in health education. The serious game “Comer Legal: A Nutritional Adventure” was developed in order to pedagogically combine the theme of food and nutrition education. This book presents reflections on the struggle of the rural population for the right to education, outlining trajectories covered since the presuppositions of “Rural Education”, until the movement today nominated as “Field Education”. It seeks to problematize the fact that education in Brazil is marked by the duality between the formal law, guaranteed by the legal framework of national scope, and the denial of this right is a reality for a portion of the population. The concluding paper presents the viewpoint of school administrators regarding the calamitous situation of the rural education in São Paulo during 1930s and 1940s. This text addresses the conflict between the everyday reality of the feasible school system and the targeted ideal for rural education in São Paulo. (Nova)
