The Tremor of Forgery

The Tremor of Forgery PDF Author: Patricia Highsmith

Category : Fiction

Pages : 239

Book Description
An expatriate is beset by dark temptations in this tale by the author of The Talented Mr. Ripley: “Her best novel” (The New Yorker). Set in Tunisia in the mid-1960s, this is the story of Howard Ingham, an American writer who has gone abroad to gather material for a movie too sordid to be set in America. Ingham is cool toward the girlfriend he left behind in New York—but his feelings start to change when she doesn’t answer his increasingly aggravated letters, and the filmmaker who hired Ingham fails to show in Tunisia. Amid the tea shops and alleys of the souk, the sun-blasted architecture, and the beaches and hotels frequented by international tourists, Ingham tries to pass the time by working on a writing project. But a series of peculiar events—a hushed-up murder, a vanished corpse, secret broadcasts to the Soviet Union—will pull him in, and may finally put his increasingly fragile sense of morality to the test. “Highsmith’s finest novel.” —Graham Greene, author of The Quiet American “Her books have stylistic texture, psychological depth, mesmeric readability.” —The Sunday Times

Category : Biography & Autobiography

Pages : 230

Book Description
Based on the life experience of Benjamin Lane and written as an autobiographical novel, He'enalu Days tells the spiritual journey of Dennis Hill, a wild-child surfer growing up in Kai Town, Honolulu, in the early 1980's, who walks into a life of drugs and parties. As a boy, Dennis falls in love with the ocean and the sport of surfing and feels that to he'enalu (surf or slide across a breaking wave) sets him free like nothing else can. Twenty years later, Dennis realizes his brokenness as a human being and cries out to God to save him. A war over his soul emerges, and Dennis discovers the physical realm we all live in reflects a coexisting spiritual realm that we cannot see, a spiritual realm that wields the power to overwhelm the physical realm in an instant. When no person can save him or ease his pain, Dennis discovers that Jesus Christ - the way and the truth and the life - is the only one who can set him free, and that eternity is too long to be wrong. These are his new He'enalu Days.

Disasters, Vulnerability, and Narratives

Disasters, Vulnerability, and Narratives PDF Author: Kasia Mika
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351403036
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 329

Book Description
This book uses narrative responses to the 2010 Haiti earthquake as a starting point for an analysis of notions of disaster, vulnerability, reconstruction and recovery. The turn to a wide range of literary works enables a composite comparative analysis, which encompasses the social, political and individual dimensions of the earthquake. This book focuses on a vision of an open-ended future, otherwise than as a threat or fear. Mika turns to concepts of hinged chronologies, slow healing and remnant dwelling. Weaving theory with attentive close-readings, the book offers an open-ended framework for conceptualising post-disaster recovery and healing. These processes happen at different times and must entail the elimination of compound vulnerabilities that created the disaster in the first place. Challenging characterisations of the region as a continuous catastrophe this book works towards a bold vision of Haiti’s and the Caribbean’s futures. The study shows how narratives can extend some of the key concepts within discipline-bound approaches to disasters, while making an important contribution to the interface between disaster studies, postcolonial ecocriticism and Haitian Studies.
